MIFV Interview Series: Dr. Jeffrey Angles on ‘The Luminous Fairies and Mothra’

Nathan sits down with Dr. Jeffrey Angles for a conversation on his next upcoming kaiju novel translation: The Luminous Fairies and Mothra. This short three-part book was the world’s introduction to the “Queen of the Monsters,” and it has a potent place in Japanese history and literary tradition. Episode 89 – ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ vs. Donny Winter vs. The Omni Viewer | “Godzilla Redux” x “Kong Quest”

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! It’s time to unpack the biggest kaiju release of 2024—Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire! For such a momentous occasion, Nate called upon YouTuber Donny Winter (Growing Up with Godzilla) and a “mystery guest”…who didn’t make it. Darn. So, he got the next best option: The Omni Viewer and his monster sidekick, Snazzy! They dive deep into the fifth entry of Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse series, unveiling its connections to classic pulp fiction and ‘80s pop culture—all without comparing it to Godzilla Minus One (for the most part) while also coining many memes. You’ll not find a more concentrated dose of positivity (and honesty) toward this escapist movie anywhere else. Since it’s set mostly in the Hollow Earth (and Nate almost researched this for Godzilla vs. Kong), the Toku Topic is Hollow Earth theory.

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 69: ‘Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster’ | Ft. Luke and Jason Jaconetti

“Sixty-nine, dudes!” That’s the first thing that comes to my mind reflecting back on this episode. I thought Nate’s personality was huge. Having the Jaconetti brothers on overwhelming. I was amused watching poor Nate try to keep up. That might explain why my notes are short for episode 69: I was too entertained to write as much. Regardless, let’s see what I have.

  • Nate was thinking of a Blue Hawaii, not a Blue Mountain. He doesn’t drink coffee. (This was pointed out by Luke).
  • Venus does trigger me…but I can’t complain about Wakabayashi. What (straight) man would? But obviously, I’m more partial to Kumi Mizuno…because reasons.
  • I used to watch Everyone Loves Mechani-Kong every week as a kid. His “brother,” Mechagodzilla, was always jealous of him because his father, Dr. Who, liked the robo-ape more. 😛
  • I knew I’d need the dump button (aka Jet) for this episode with them Jaconetti boys. Sometimes the muzzle slips off their mouths.
  • MY BROTHER IS DEAD!!! (I was PTSD-ing a bit at the time).
  • I’m definitely playing “Fazers” in the Monster Zero episode. (Except I didn’t. Oops).
  • My off-air language? SLANDER! No, it’s true. People think sailors are foul-mouthed. You should hear space sailors (that’s what “astronaut” literally means) like me. We’d make seamen blush.

Here’s Nate’s research. As you’ll see, the Jaconetti brothers dominated the conversation so much, he didn’t get to a lot of it.

Slowly but surely, I’m catching up! At least it’s faster than Nate with the episodes. 😛

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 65: ‘Mothra vs. Godzilla’ | Ft. Daniel DiManna

Nate’s been calling these blogs my “prison epistles” because I wrote them while in the Island’s detention center. I’m no Apostle Paul nor am I religious, but it’s a funny comparison. I admit it’s hard to write when there’s a gorgeous Planet X lady in the cell next door. The problem is she sleeps a lot. A good kiss would fix that. Glen gave me some pointers on kissing. (No, he didn’t kiss me! Get your head out of the gutter!) Anyway, here are my notes from Episode 65: ‘Mothra vs. Godzilla.’

  • I can’t find a reason to be upset with Danny. It’s scientifically impossible to be angry at Pollyanne Danny.
  • “Big Willy 3.” Not bad. I doubt he can rap, though. I should know: I’m a connoisseur of gangsta rap.
  • Hey, I thought that lost recording was funny. It’s not fit for public consumption like a lot of off-air conversations we have on this show, but still funny. If people knew…well, let’s just say Kaiju Kim won’t just be canceling Michael Hamilton.
  • Mocking Nate is definitely in my contract. It didn’t take much to convince the Board to add that clause. Even after I lost respect for my evil bosses, I insisted they keep it in. Again, it didn’t take much convincing.
  • The Mothra vs. Godzilla novelization was written by Takamasa Ueda and published by Kodansha in 1984 (yes, 20 years later).
  • The pamphlet has no fake news, despite stereotypes. I double- and triple-checked.
  • Typhoon Vera caused $5.82 billion in 2023 money. Insane!
  • Which Mothra is the biggest? That depends on what you look at.
    • Largest larva: Showa at 180 meters long (Mothra, 1961)
    • Largest imago: Showa at 80 meters long (Mothra, 1961)
    • Largest wingspan: Showa at 250 meters (Mothra, 1961) (MonsterVerse version is close at 244.8 meters)
    • Heaviest: Millennium at 25,000 metric tons (Godzilla: Final Wars)
  • Just doing my job…whatever that was when I wrote this….
  • Prequels?!
  • Can you blame me for loving Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machines?

If you want to know what Nate didn’t talk about during the episode (which was a lot), here are his leftover notes:

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have an X-lady to wake up. No, not that kind of X-lady!

BONUS – Kaiju 101 and Other Tales from Ramen-Con 2022

Hello, kaiju lovers! Over the weekend, Nathan made a day trip up South Bend, Indiana, to attend Ramen-Con—which is about anime, not cooking…most of the time. The theme this year was kaiju, so he had to go. He gave a panel presentation called “Kaiju 101,” which was a crash course in the basics of giant monsters. That’s what most of the audio is in this bonus recording is from. Before that, Nate talks about the rest of his experiences at the con—including representing Moby Dick against Rhinoblaster in Kaiju Court!

We’d like to give a shout-out to our MIFV MAX patrons Travis Alexander; Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio); Bex from Redeemed Otaku; Damon Noyes, The Cel Cast, TofuFury, Eric Anderson of Nerd Chapel, Ted Williams, Wynja the Ninja, and Brad “Batman” Eddelman! Episode 69: ‘Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster’ | Ft. Luke and Jason Jaconetti

Hello, kaiju lovers! Today them Jaconetti boys, Luke and Jason, join Nate for the latest entry in “Godzilla Redux”: Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. This was Toho’s third kaiju film in the momentous year of 1964 and their second Godzilla film that year. As Luke puts it, it’s The Avengers (2012) of Toho kaiju, where several monsters who debuted in solo films come together to face a common alien enemy. It’s a momentous turning point for the franchise: Godzilla and Rodan have their “face turns,” and it’s the first appearance of Godzilla’s archnemesis, the three-headed golden space dragon himself, King Ghidorah. Get ready for a lively, nostalgic discussion riddled with pro-wrestling references!

Before the broadcast, Nate is met by Jessica at his new mega-office. During their argument (what’d you expect?), Gary comes in along with a beautiful mystery woman, whom Jessica immediately hates. Later, Nate returns to his office where he argues with Jessica again, only for Gary to come begging for help—just as the mystery woman reveals herself to be a Bug Lady from the Church of Mothrianity!

Check out all of Luke and Jason’s podcast at Two True Freaks: https://twotruefreaks.com/podcast/.

The prologue and epilogue, “Jessica has a Romantic Rival! The Vampiric Strike of Kalyptra!” was written by Nathan Marchand.

Guest stars:

  • Sarah Marchand as Jessica Shaw/Crystal Lady
  • Kim Lacanilao as Mina/Kalyptra
  • Damon Noyes as Gary Steward, Mimo, and Motte-Priester Herzog Jerry Nachtfalter
  • Hoshiko as Luna

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 59: ‘Mothra’ (1961) | Godzilla Redux | Ft. Becky ‘Bex’ Smith

Hindsight is 20/20, and it shows me this broadcast for Episode 59 was beyond weird and awkward. That’s what happens when your guest is a shapeshifting Bug Lady from a scary Rolisican Mothra cult. Not even my War in Space-attuned combat skills could handle her. That was the worst part. But I don’t want to talk about that. Instead, here are my notes on that episode.

  • I retract my compliment about her laying down the law, because, you know, thieving, murderous Bug Lady.
  • I should’ve known something was wrong when she talked about getting to the Island. This is why I really should just shuttle every guest here. But I can’t make them all do that, even when I offer a ride on my giant robots.
  • “Handsome Nelson.” Another warning sign I should’ve heeded. That guy was a crony capitalist creep!
  • “Lepidoptera.” Also a sign. No one outside of an entomologist would know that name.
  • The Peanuts’ given names were Hideyo and Tsukiko Ito.
  • Yes, I’m triggered by a planet that I fixed…in my totally not fictional memoir.
  • I know what was in the red drink…but I don’t want to talk about it.
  • Note to self: remind Bex to watch Ikiru.
  • (ball-busting riff CENSORED for Nate’s sake)
  • I was consulted on the blueprints for Tokyo Tower after the Gyaos attack in 1960. How do you think they learned to rebuild it faster? It’s not just Japanese ingenuity and efficiency.
  • “Diptera.” I should’ve known! Again, only entomologists!
  • If you saw those astronaut girls, Nate, you’d understand. Seriously, hubba-hubba!
  • Why didn’t I suspect something from the laughing?! “Altitude”?! BS! Such BS!
  • I’ll agree with “Not-Bex” on one thing: you’re “genki,” Nate. That should be your name now. 😛
  • Seriously…“Bex” knew way too much about insects—because Bug Lady! Of course she’d know a lot about her “family.”

Now, to save space on the MIFV website (no one has time to scroll anymore), I’m attaching a PDF of Nate’s leftover notes. Sadly, there are no riffs from me. I’m still trying to catch up on blogging. LINK:

As for upcoming episodes, Nate’s friend Nick Hayden is coming for Ameri-kaiju and Cloverfield. Then we have Luke and Jason Jaconetti joining us for Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster as part of “Godzilla Redux.”

Despite everything that has happened to all of us at MIFV, as I always say, “We shall overcome!”

Episode 65: ‘Mothra vs. Godzilla’ | Godzilla Redux | Ft. Daniel DiManna

Hello, kaiju lovers! Today’s episode is a momentous one. Nate discusses the all-time classic Mothra vs. Godzilla with Daniel DiManna of the Godzilla Novelization Project. Now Nate has come full circle because this was the first film whose episode he recorded first in his previous podcast life. But this episode is better! How could it not be with the living kaiju encyclopedia as a guest? Nate and Danny discuss everything: the Godzilla suit, the Mothra puppet, the script, the characters, and of course, the late great Akira Takarada. This G-film doesn’t do anything new, but what it does, it does to near-perfection. No wonder it’s considered one of the best of the franchise!

Afterward, Nate and Danny are joined by Nate’s pseudo-sister, Jessica, to livestream the sendoff of Mothra’s newly-laid egg back to Infant Island. Unfortunately, the Church of Mothrianity strikes again! The web-splitting Silkworm attacks, and even Jessica’s magical girl persona, Crystal Lady, can’t stop her—until she gets help from a new companion.

The epilogue, “The Coming of Mimo! Crystal Lady vs. Silkworm!” was written by Nathan Marchand.

Episode 59: ‘Mothra’ (1961) | Godzilla Redux | Ft. Becky ‘Bex’ Smith

Hello, kaiju lovers! Our subseries “Godzilla Redux” continues with what some call Toho screenwriter Shinichi Sekizawa’s masterpiece: Mothra (1961). Becky “Bex” Smith of the Redeemed Otaku podcast joins Nate to discuss this film—because apparently Nate can’t talk about a Mothra film without her. While Bex seems weirdly obsesses over the genus names of insects, Nate regales her with kaiju-sized info bombs related to the making of the film, the historical backdrop against which it was made (controversial treaty renewals with the U.S.), and the often crazy interpretations academics and critics have of the film (blackface, anyone?). That’s just some of what you’ll learn about this kaiju classic!

Beforehand, Nate meets with his pseudo-sister, the semi-secret magical girl Jessica, who’s just been promoted to director of tourism on the Island. They discuss her new job and awkwardly talk about her seeming crush on Legal Action Team paralegal, Gary. After the broadcast, though, Nate and company discover “Bex” isn’t who she appears to be—and Crystal Lady has to get involved.

This episode’s prologue and epilogue, “Bexy a Traitor?! The Church of Mothrianity Attacks!”, was written by Nathan Marchand with Becky Smith and Daniel DiManna.

Guest stars:

  • Sarah Marchand as Jessica Shaw/Crystal Lady
  • Becky Smith as Peppermoth
  • Daniel DiManna as “Old Janitor”
  • Damon Noyes as Motte-Priester Herzog Jerry Nachtfalter
  • Hoshiko as Luna
