Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 74: Chris Cooke vs. ‘Power Rangers’ (2017)

This was my last broadcast (episode 74) before I was incarcerated. Actually, “detained” is a better word for it. The Legal Action Team worked hard to keep me from being sent to the mainland for trial. Me and my lady friend. (More on that later). Again, this episode was broadcast before the tragic death of Jason David Frank (see our charity livestream for more on that). Tommy Oliver isn’t in this film, so I don’t know how much would’ve changed. Regardless, I only had a handful of notes for this one.

  • Freestylin’ to Wu-Tang Clan with Chris in my mechs. Gotta love it. Nobody should hear it, though. We’d get canceled seven ways from Sunday.
  • The Island needs a donut store. I’m still hungry.
  • The last name of the screenwriter is Gatins. Listen to my Entertaining Info Dump for confirmation.
  • I still feel betrayed by George Lucas! The Phantom Menace isn’t what we wanted! But I should’ve known after he had Greedo shoot first. As for selling the franchise to Disney—you know what, I need to stop.
  • Speaking of ranting, I could rant just as well about the damn robots in this film! The “Archano-don” is ridiculous. So is the six-legged Triceratops. It’s no surprise the comic book sequel (link) tries to obscure those design elements.
  • Yes, Nate is a sadist. I’ve learned that all too well. Just ask his last girlfriend.
  • I think you meant “digital” not “optical” effects, Nate.
  • Okay, fine, I was daydreaming. You can’t fire me for that! You don’t have the “fire power”!

Nate’s research is once again derived heavily from his notes for the Power Trip episode on this film.

I only have a few more left before I’m finally caught up. Excuse me while I go finish.

Jimmy’s Notes on ‘Episode 73 – Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie’ | Ft. The Cel Cast

Re-listening to this episode is bittersweet, to say the least. It was broadcast before the tragic death of actor Jason David Frank. This discussion would’ve been much different if it happened afterward. (Listen to the charity livestream [link] to hear that). Regardless, I had a surprising amount of notes on episode 73, which is partly due to my history with the cheeky AI Drew and Jacob have on their show. Can she generate art now? I’m sure she needs a job. Anyway, my notes are:

  • Alliteration or not, you worry me, Nate. (Whatever it was that worried me).
  • You only say I suck at it because my mic is broke. That will be fixed soon.
  • It wouldn’t be the first restraining order I’ve gotten. (D-Let). Some past guests, who shall remain nameless, may have filed some.
  • The “Yes, quite” habit still concerns me, Nate. It still does.
  • I, too, have roommates I don’t like to talk about, Nate.
  • Ninjor is blue, not purple. Get it right, Power Tripper!
  • I also wasn’t a kid when MMPR came out. And yes, Apollo 13 is one of my favorite movies. I could rave about it for long enough to travel to the Moon in a standard-issue NASA space capsule.
  • Cutting me off and telling me to call my sidekick?! Your new power has gone to your head, Marchand!
  • Nate always assumes I know nothing…like Schultz. (If you got that reference, I’m impressed).
  • I met the Stepford Teenagers once. They’re the children of the Stepford Wives, naturally, and just as creepy.
  • I met Snoggle once. It might be why he never got to Dulcea. Just saying.
  • I used to use “I’m a frog” as a pickup line. But that was when I was a frog for a while. I don’t want to talk about it.
  • But “Ivan’s Ooze” is real! (beer image) I may have to switch to it in light of recent controversies with certain alcohol companies.
  • First, you’re disgusting, Marchand. Second, they’re “Oozemen,” not “Oozlets.” That’s what Michael incorrectly called them on The Power Trip episode you did on this movie (link).

Now for the mandatory sharing of Nate’s research on the movie in question—much of which was taken from his Power Trip notes.

I’m inching closer to the episodes where I was forced to take a prison time hiatus. It didn’t stop me from being intrepid or a producer. We all know Nate needs me.

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 61: Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, ‘Green with Evil’ | Ft. Michael Hamilton

The Jimmy train keeps a-rollin’! Episode 61 (Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers – “Green with Evil”) was an interesting broadcast because, like Raymund Martin, I moonlighted as a substitute Ranger back in the ‘80s. It was for the Bio-Man team. I was blue. Here’s a picture of me in uniform:

All that to say, I have a bit of a frame of reference for the perks and perils of being a Ranger.

This episode was also interesting because we got a drunk call from Big Willy Three. He’s still reeling from the Kirk-fu chop I gave him last December. I’d say, “Poor guy,” but that would imply I cared.

Anyway, are my notes from that episode:

  • For once, Nate is clashing with Michael. Normally it’s me. But I’m not surprised given what I’ve heard on The Power Trip. 😛
  • I must agree with Michael about Nate’s “girly” hands. I’ve been trying to toughen them up with some Kirk-fu training, but I can only do so much. I may have to pass him off to Ozaki.
  • Michael, you’re resourceful. I knew you’d get to the Island. Plus, Uber-Moguera needed a tune-up. It is a mecha cobbled together using reverse-engineered future tech and alien tech. When it breaks down, it really beaks down.
  • Michael, I could put a good word in for you with Elon Musk if you want to patent the Rad Bug for Billy Cranston. I’m still a fan of Mr. Musk and have been trying to get in contact with him in case he wants an experienced NASA engineer as a consultant for SpaceX.
  • I keep a tally of how many times I say, “Damnit, Marchand!” in a day. My personal record is 97.
  • Don’t get me started on the coffee creamer! There was a band of office girls who trapped me in the breakroom until I refilled it. Hell hath no fury like a woman deprived of morning coffee. Sheesh! Just visit the Craterite Café like everyone else. I don’t care if the animatronic Putty Pandemonium band can’t carry a tune!
  • I can’t find any information on JDF’s parents, Ray and Janice, aside from seeing that Janice was an actress. Both have kept low profiles. All that to say, I can’t confirm or disprove that JDF was an army brat.
  • I’d rather have a loudmouthed space pirate queen than have my crush nearly murder me, Marchand!
  • “Little Nate.” As funny as that is, I’m not confirming it.
  • Michael needed to stop it because 1) family show, and 2) my dagger is bigger. Ha!
  • First, “Rutabaga” was the name of the planet, not the king. That cabbage-head’s name was Rooten-Toomen. Regardless, I met him once. Whatever you do, don’t eat his salads.
  • I couldn’t find a specific term for what Michael said about getting his best ideas while showering except for “Eureka moments.” It has to do with the brain having restricted sensory input, which allows it to process other things. You can read more about it on Insider.
  • I agree. Shutting up WHG3 was the best thing I’ve done on MIFV…except maybe when I outwitted the Board by calling in my friends at NASA so they could rescue us with the Gohten after Nate was shot into space.

As usual, here are Nate’s uncut notes:

One step closer to completing my New Year’s resolution to catch up on my blogs!

Episode 73 – ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie’ | Ft. The Cel Cast

(This episode was largely recorded and written before the tragic news of Jason David Frank’s death).

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In what you could call the perfect crossover between their podcasts, MIFV MAX members Drew and Jacob of The Cel Cast sponsor a discussion of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie. It has animated kaiju in it—they’re just bad CGI robots. But the real star of this film, like other pop culture blockbusters in 1995, was the villain Ivan Ooze (played by Paul Freeman), who steals every scene and eats all the scenery. If you’ve heard Nate discuss this on one of his other podcasts, The Power Trip, this will be an expansion on what he said there, particularly on the subject of the hero’s journey. Too bad for Nate and his co-hosts, their discussion is interrupted by a certain snarky bonehead.

The night before the broadcast, Nate journals about getting voicemails from Karone—an actual Power Ranger—and Raymund—who keeps claiming he was a Ranger. After the broadcast, Nate goes to a special “thank you for your service” meet-and-greet being held in honor of the recently retired Tommy Oliver. But an old foe of Tommy’s crashes the party.

This episode is dedicated in loving memory to Jason David Frank.

The prologue and epilogue, “Return of the Green Rangers,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Michael Hamilton. “Rito Calls” written by Nathan Marchand.

Guest Cast

  • Celeste Mora as Karone
  • Damon Noyes as Raymund Martin and Gary Steward
  • Joey Sourlis as Tommy Oliver
  • Shane Cochran as Ivan Ooze
  • Daniel DiManna as Ninjor

Additional music:

  • “Go Go Power Rangers” by The Power Rangers Orchestra
  • “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo
  • “Ivan Ooze” by Graeme Revell
  • “Go Green Ranger Go (Instrumental Redux)” by Ron Wasserman
  • “Susume! Gorenger (Opening Theme) Cover 秘密戦隊ゴレンジャー”by It Takes 2 to Toku

BONUS – All Podcasts Attack Special: Days of the Dead: All Monsters Attack Convention

Welcome, kaiju lovers, heroes of the internet, and listeners with attitude! This past weekend, Nathan and his Power Trip co-host, Michael Hamilton, met each other in real life for the first time (and the world somehow didn’t explode). They attended a small upstart “spin-off” convention called Days of the Dead: All Monsters Attack, which was held in Indianapolis. This bonus episode is a late-night postmortem chat they had afterward, and it’s being shared on the feeds for Monster Island Film Vault, Henshin Men, and The Power Trip because the guest line-up was relevant to all three shows! Hear about them meeting Gamera’s best girl, Ayako Fujitani, Bin Furuya, the original Ultraman suit actor, and the OG Red Power Ranger himself, Austin St. John.

Learn more about the con on its website.
