Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 62: Eric Anderson vs. ‘The Blob’ (1958)

Here we go! Time to share my notes on one of the most Americana monster movies ever made: The Blob (1958). Something I forgot to mention during the episode 62 broadcast was that I’ve been a huge fan of Steve McQueen since I was a kid. Him and James Dean and, of course, Nick Adams (my “spirit animal”). Those should come as no surprise to anyone. Hell, I once took a martial arts lesson as a youth in the 1970s from Mr. McQueen, who was trained by Bruce Lee. So, you could say I vicariously learned from the best.

Anyway, let’s get into my notes:

  • “Kaiju doo-doo”? Let’s not insult the Blob like that! Besides, I’ve talked with Ricky the kaiju zookeeper, and he says kaiju crap is different from monster to monster.
  • I let Nate have it every day. It’s part of my job description as his “intrepid producer” and his friend.
  • I checked the filming locations for the film, which, according to Wikipedia, were “around Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, principal photography took place at Valley Forge Studios. Several scenes were filmed in the towns of Chester Springs, Downingtown, Phoenixville, and Royersford, including the basement of a local restaurant which is today named Downingtown Diner.”
  • I hereby challenge Nate to Unmatched! Now I just need to decide who is my main….
  • Blobfest was held this year.
  • The game you were thinking of, Nate, was De Blob.
  • It’s “One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater,” Eric. You got the order wrong.
  • I taught Eric everything he knows about fact-checking radio hosts. He’s a good padawan.
  • My ego has recovered from the fact-checking. My storied life has made me resilient in mind and body.
  • The timeline for the sequels and remakes is 1972 and 1988.
  • I found Blobermouth on YouTube. We should have Eric on for a follow-up.
  • Whatever, Blobermouth (aka Nate—if that is your real name! Are you an alien? That’d explain some things).
  • The Blob will scare the hell out of you—at least according to the church-folk who made it. I confirmed this with Rev. Mifune.
  • “Frog and Toad” thing, huh? Haha!
  • SpaceGodzilla scat? That’s a theory, all right. I doubt there are any scientists who would agree with it…except maybe Dr. Dourif.
  • If I was Cobra Commander, I’d be ruling the world by now. I’ve read the “Evil Overlord List.” Be glad I have refrained from universal conquest.
  • “Presetellar,” Nate? You meant, “prestellar.” As in, “before stars.” This NASA man knows this! Typos are your kryptonite, it seems, writer-boy. 😛

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 60: John LeMay vs. ‘THEM!’

Nate’s not the only one who’s way behind on his podcast duties. I have metric ton of notes from past episodes—or so it feels. But contractual obligations must be fulfilled! My New Year’s resolution is to get my blogs caught up. To save time, I’ll be sharing the notes I jotted down during the broadcast and including a PDF of Nate’s uncut notes. I won’t be editing out the portions he discussed on each episode; not until I get caught up.

But given that I was in jail for a while, I had nothing better to do than compile these.

So, bear with me, starting with episode 60 (THEM!), which featured by my former flame war nemesis, John LeMay:

  • Matango boosters are important, guys—unless you’re Dr. Dourif. That weirdo is an example of immersion therapy gone horribly wrong. I’m amazed he isn’t a supervillain yet.
  • It’s “Meganulon” or “Meganuron,” John. But I can understand. It’s the “L” vs. “R” pronunciation confusion with Japanese. But I still expected better from you!
  • I hate Matango brain fog! It’s the worst! Trust me, I know. I had to tend to those psychedelic mutants once on Halloween a few years ago. All I got out of it was a vision of Kumi Mizuno…at least, I thought it was her. Or was it a premonition of Kaguya?
  • Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and Gorgo did, in fact, have the same director: Eugène Lourié.
  • I once had to battle a Kamacuras with an American flamethrower. That was mostly because the Russian flamethrower I was given first didn’t work. And because Monster Island zookeeper, Ricky, didn’t know what he was doing. Who hires these people? He’s gotten better, but I’d rather not wrangle monsters with dangerous equipment.
  • “Japanese” not “kaiju,” Nate. Professional radio host there.
  • Apparently, ants do go to war. They fight over territory and to defend their queen.
  • Nate is Russian spy confirmed. That accent is too good. Have some fun in the sun in a Siberian gulag! Got a Solzhenitsyn book you can read?
  • I did some digging, but I didn’t see anything about the ant puppets from THEM! still existing today. I could be wrong, though. We have the real things on the Island, but I’d rather deal with a prop. Speaking of which…
  • I killed a giant fire ant once. I don’t want to talk about it.
  • Michael does have an explosive temper. If you heard what I recorded of him off the air…more people than Kaiju Kim would cancel him!
  • I meant to fact check John’s Trinity nuclear test story involving his grandparents…but I forgot what I was fact-checking, and I don’t have time to re-listen to the episode. Here’s an article on the event: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_(nuclear_test).
  • Marchand deprived me of work looking up Beast of Yucca Flats! I don’t get paid enough for this!

MIFV MAX #15: ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ (2000) | Ft. Sarah Marchand (abridged)

Merry Christmas, Kaiju Lovers! And yes, you read that right! Nathan is covering a holiday “monster movie”—because his real sister said so! Yes, Sarah Marchand joins him as a guest host to discuss one of the movies that they’ve, ironically, bonded over: How the Grinch Stole Christmas, starring Jim Carrey. While it stretches the purview of the podcast thinly, Nathan does justify it with some weak connections (like Rick Baker making the Grinch costume and makeup). While Sarah is quite nostalgic for this movie, having seen it when she was about the same age as Cindy Lou Who, it’s a guilty pleasure for Nathan because he has issues with it as an adaptation of a classic Dr. Seuss book and the original 1966 animated TV special. Expect to hear almost the entire film—or at least Jim Carrey’s lines—quoted throughout! But Nathan and Sarah do agree that, despite this movie’s faults, it’s better than the stupid new horror parody, The Mean One.

Episode 73 – ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie’ | Ft. The Cel Cast

(This episode was largely recorded and written before the tragic news of Jason David Frank’s death).

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In what you could call the perfect crossover between their podcasts, MIFV MAX members Drew and Jacob of The Cel Cast sponsor a discussion of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie. It has animated kaiju in it—they’re just bad CGI robots. But the real star of this film, like other pop culture blockbusters in 1995, was the villain Ivan Ooze (played by Paul Freeman), who steals every scene and eats all the scenery. If you’ve heard Nate discuss this on one of his other podcasts, The Power Trip, this will be an expansion on what he said there, particularly on the subject of the hero’s journey. Too bad for Nate and his co-hosts, their discussion is interrupted by a certain snarky bonehead.

The night before the broadcast, Nate journals about getting voicemails from Karone—an actual Power Ranger—and Raymund—who keeps claiming he was a Ranger. After the broadcast, Nate goes to a special “thank you for your service” meet-and-greet being held in honor of the recently retired Tommy Oliver. But an old foe of Tommy’s crashes the party.

This episode is dedicated in loving memory to Jason David Frank.

The prologue and epilogue, “Return of the Green Rangers,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Michael Hamilton. “Rito Calls” written by Nathan Marchand.

Episode 72: Record All Monsters vs. ‘Colossal’

Hello, kaiju lovers! Today on “Ameri-kaiju,” we get artsy with the indie film Colossal, starring Anne Hathaway. Robert and Courtney from the Record All Monsters podcast stop by to have a thoughtful discussion on this unique kaiju film where the monsters are psychic projections of the main characters. While it’s a comedy, it touches on some heavy subjects, like alcoholism and narcissism. All three hosts share personal stories connected to those subjects. While some commentators have said that the film is about domestic abuse, Nate disagrees. So instead, today’s Toku Topic is on the psychology of inner demons because every character in Colossal is wrestling with one.

Beforehand, Cameron Winter pays Nate a visit in Nate’s prestigious media master office. Winter asks Nate if he knows anything about Jessica helping to free the Ymir—and to maintain his cover, Nate reluctantly says she conspired to do so. Afterward, Nate and Jet Jaguar go to the Heat Seeker and meet H.E.A.T.’s techie, Randy, who sends the robot N.I.G.E.L. to spy on Winter’s operations on the Beta Site. There they make a surprise discovery that’s more than they bargained for, and now Jet must save them.

The prologue and epilogue, “Trespassing,” was written by Nathan Marchand.

MIFV MAX #13: Godzilla Day Livestream (Abridged) | Ft. Michael Hamilton

After a full day of celebrating the King of the Monsters’ 68th birthday, Nathan is joined by his Power Trip co-host, Michael Hamilton, in an out-of-character livestream. They discuss Fathom Events’ screening of Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, the two Gigan short films that were posted on YouTube (for five minutes), and the myriad of Godzilla-related news that broke Nov. 3, 2022. They spend most of that time speculating about the new Godzilla film directed by the acclaimed Takashi Yamazaki that was officially announced. What do they expect, and what would they like to see, as fans?

Kenny Kappa’s Kaiju Krypt Presents: ‘The Voice in the Night’ by William Hope Hodgson (Read by Dr. Dante Dourif)

Happy Halloween, Kaiju Lovers! As a special treat from all of us on Monster Island, here’s an episode from one of our newest radio shows, Kenny Kappa’s Kaiju Krypt. That mischievously insane yokai presents the scariest kaiju-related short stories using equally weird readers. In this episode, Monster Island’s resident mad scientist, the one and only Dr. Dante Dourif, reads a classic piece of monster literature that means a lot to him: “The Voice in the Night” by William Hope Hodgson, which was the loose inspiration for Ishiro Honda’s 1963 classic, Matango. Make sure to tighten your belts because you’re about to get your pants scared off!

In a fun little “sequel” to MIFV’s glorious Pacific Rim episode, Nate is joined by the co-host of The Drift Space podcast, Jack “GMan” Hudgens, to discuss a sequel Nate has hated since seeing it in a theater: Pacific Rim: Uprising. Nate didn’t want to have an episode on this film, but when he saw an opportunity for a Fifth Wednesday Bonus Episode, he decided to bring Jack, a stalwart defender of the film, to convince him it has merit. And he makes a valiant effort, going so far as to compare it to Jun Fukuda’s Godzilla films! Does Jack succeed at changing Nate’s mind? Listen to find out!
