But I wouldn\u2019t mind being shot into space. I could easily pilot my way back to Earth, unlike Nate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for my notes on <a href=\"http:\/\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/index.php\/2021\/07\/14\/episode-44-the-msties-vs-gamera-vs-zigra-feat-travis-alexander-and-neil-riebe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">episode <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/index.php\/2021\/07\/14\/episode-44-the-msties-vs-gamera-vs-zigra-feat-travis-alexander-and-neil-riebe\/\">44<\/a>, I took a surprising amount for a movie about a giant flying turtle battling a huge space shark. But sadly, the Board mandated you not watch those. I\u2019m genuinely sorry.<\/li><li>Appropriately, Nezura and the Baby Gameras have a xylophone player.<\/li><li>There are several theories related to the effect of sonic waves on the brain, but <a href=\"https:\/\/elemental.medium.com\/how-to-hack-your-brain-with-sound-166371c85a66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">testing these theories has yielded inconclusive results<\/a>.<\/li><li>It\u2019s \u201cRhodes and McCorkle,\u201d Nate, not \u201cBrooke and McCorkle.\u201d Brooke is one of their first names, so it\u2019s understandable you\u2019d get them mixed up.<\/li><li>The name of the baseball team with the \u201ccurse of the colonel\u201d is the Honshin Tigers.<\/li><li>From what I can tell, the \u201cFRP\u201d from your Kamogawa Sea World research was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fibre-reinforced_plastic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiber-reinforced plastic<\/a>.<\/li><li>Doc Brown\u2019s theories on time travel\u2026don\u2019t get me started! It creates way too many paradoxes and begs too many questions. I\u2019ll spare you all the rant.<\/li><li>Travis and I had a great discussion about time travel in <em>Star Wars<\/em> after the broadcast. Or rather, he listened to me rant.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/index.php\/2020\/04\/08\/episode-14-dallas-mora-vs-kong-skull-island\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The <em>Skull Island<\/em> episode was 14, Nate.<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are Nate\u2019s leftover notes from his episode 44 research, included as per my contractual obligations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Japan does have a space agency. <a href=\"http:\/\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/index.php\/2020\/04\/22\/episode-15-battle-in-outer-space-with-luke-jaconetti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Episode 15<\/a>.<\/li><li>The audio quality on the theme song is subpar. What happened? <em>(Budget cuts. Duh. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>The first scenes have parallelism: Ken starts his day and we see the animals at SeaWorld.<\/li><li>A seal named Nick?! <em>(He\u2019s not your friend, Mr. Hayden. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Was Gamera just there or was his Turtle Sense tingling? <em>(Turtle Sense. Woman X actually says kids are smarter.<\/li><li>Planet Zigra. Zigrans. Monster is named Zigra. <em>(Confusing, I know. It\u2019d be like a human naming his child \u201cEarth\u201d or \u201cHuman\u201d or \u201cTerran.\u201d Although, there is a Tera Strong. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>She references both the Kanto and Sanriku earthquakes (<a href=\"http:\/\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/index.php\/2021\/01\/27\/episode-33-submersion-of-japan-feat-adam-noyes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">episode 33<\/a>).<\/li><li>Lots of scientific info for the kids. Educational.<\/li><li>She (Woman X) runs like molasses. And conveniently freezes. The heck?!<\/li><li>And the kids somehow know how to use the spaceship controls. Ken even says he can use a motorboat easily. <em>(I taught him now. \ud83d\ude1b \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Gamera always has bloodshot eyes. Is he on drugs? Not sleeping? Both? <em>(Perhaps he should be drug tested. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Man, the dads missed a ride with Gamera because they got hypnotized.<\/li><li>Helen says at tech end of the scene, \u201cBoys are no use at all.\u201d The littlest feminist.<\/li><li>\u201cEarth Defense Army,\u201d huh? <em>(They didn\u2019t last long, unfortunately, in large part because of their weakness during the Zigra Invasion of 1971. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Of course the fisherman stops for Woman X. <em>(What guy wouldn\u2019t? \ud83d\ude1b \u00a0\u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>And Tokyo Tower will be destroyed again later in a better Gamera film.<\/li><li>Oh, now Gamera\u2019s underbelly can take shots. And yet he still needs a rock.<\/li><li>And his fire breath is so hot, it still works underwater. Sure. <em>(It defies science, so I don\u2019t get it, either. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Inexplicable bipedal-ness!<\/li><li>These Showa Gamera movies liked not have normal bipedal monsters aside from Gamera.<\/li><li>So, the different water pressure made him bigger. And he\u2019s going to wipe everyone out because of this. Also, he should rule the oceans because he\u2019s \u201cbeautiful.\u201d <em>(He\u2019s quite the narcissist. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Good grief, these kids can sneak into anything, including bathyspheres. Why? <em>(Ninjas. Duh! \ud83d\ude1b \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Gamera foes love to sleep. Zigra, Jiger, Barugon. Others?<\/li><li>Gamera threw a rock at Zigra and then snuck up to grab the bathysphere. What the heck?!<\/li><li>Chikako the geologist knows a lot about biology. <em>(All scientists know everything about science. Trist me, I know. \ud83d\ude1b \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>What happens if cell activity stops? <em>(Is this a trick question? \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>They\u2019re dead but not dead? They say to use electroshock\u2014and we don\u2019t see it.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Commentary by Sean Rhoads and Brooke McCorkle<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Opens with a moon exploration scene, which was a product of the time. Apollo program going on in 1971. Moon landing in 1969.<\/li><li>Yellow caps and blue shirts were the uniforms for preschoolers.<\/li><li>The actress who plays the older sister was Flobella two years earlier.<\/li><li>Interestingly, the EPA was established this year.<\/li><li>Japan relies on the sea more than any other country, and twice as much as second-place Scandinavia.<\/li><li>There\u2019s disagreement over the \u201cGamera Song\u201d lyrics because the words can be used, in one form or another, for elements (gold, wood, fire, etc.), the days of the week, or the names of planets.<\/li><li>(Rhoades says \u201cGamera vs. Gigan\u201d). <em>(I\u2019d have interrupted and corrected them, but I wasn\u2019t there. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Tokyo Tower is a national symbol, particularly of technological advancement because it\u2019s a radio tower.<\/li><li>McCorkle sees Zigra as the embodiment of planetary wrath because he has the same blame as his planet. Similar to Battra.<\/li><li>The environmental moral is about personal and not corporate pollution.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Arrow Booklet<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Daiei was removed from the Tokyo Stock Exchange Dec. 28, 1971.<\/li><li>Yuasa blamed the studio\u2019s failure on Masaichi\u2019s son, Hidemasa, being \u201ctoo much of an artist to run a movie studio.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Ragone Intro<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>He says this was the first Gamera movie to tackle environmentalism. Others have argued against this.<\/li><li>The old man is bad attempt at a joke referring to a Japanese folk tale about a woman travels into the ocean and returns as an old man.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Big Book by John LeMay<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Yuasa says Zigra was inspired by a shark attack in Japan that made national news.<\/li><li>Gamera gets off easy\u2014hypnotized into a coma\u2014compared to previous movies.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Galbraith<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Describes Zigra as \u201cpart shark, part bird, with a touch of the <em>Nautilus<\/em>.\u201d <em>(He\u2019s not wrong. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Calls this \u201ca cheap, depressing little film.\u201d <em>(Okay, even I think this is a bit mean. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unsurprisingly, Nate got through all his notes on Kamogawa Sea World. But then again, it\u2019s not like it was a particularly scholarly topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next week is our first ever Patreon-sponsored episode.
