Nate has some explaining to do! \ud83d\ude1b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s get started:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Nate mispronounced \u201csyndrome.\u201d Shame, shame. \ud83d\ude1b<\/li><li>I asked Mr. Martin for his thoughts on pen theft, and this is what he told me on Twitter:<ul><li>\u201cPer the Standards and Practices memorandum issued by the (Monster Island Board of Directors): Any and all items located on Monster Island, its wharf and docking bay, and all nearby archipelagos, whether explicitly or implicitly stated, belong to the Monster Island Entertainment Corporation, LLC, and its subsidiaries and stockholders. Any willful destruction and\/or unauthorized removal of MIEC \u2018meek\u2019) property is a crime under Oceanic Law; dismissal, fines, and jail time are all possible dependent upon the severity of the crime. Judgement will be handled by the Monster Island Judicial System (\u2018midges\u2019) and justice will be swift and fair. The Monster Island Legal Action Team will oversee all prosecutions, with the current Attorney General presiding as Lead Counsel against any defendants.\u201d<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>I then said, \u201cThank you. I now fear for (Ben Avery\u2019s) life.\u201d To which Mr. Martin said, \u201cI believe the Board has discontinued the use of genetically-engineered Hunter-Tracker Meganula larvae, but don\u2019t quote me on that until I get Gary to do the archive research.\u201d<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>How did Ben watch both versions of the movie? I suspect he watched it with his kids before leaving for the Island and then again when he arrived.<\/li><li><em>The Exorcist<\/em> film was released December 26, 1973. The novel was published June 1971. In other words, <em>Gamera vs. Jiger<\/em> predates both.<\/li><li>Yes, Shunsuke Kikuchi worked on both <em>Dragon Ball<\/em> and <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em>.<\/li><li>\u201cYou and Jimmy\u201d? You mean me and Masao? Be specific, Marchand!<\/li><li>The name of the Keisuke actor is Sanshiro Honoo.<\/li><li>It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lemuria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lemuria<\/a>, Nate. That was the other \u201clost continent\u201d you couldn\u2019t think of.<\/li><li>It annoys me that I forgot what I was going to say toward the end of the Toku Talk.<\/li><li>Nate was right. The Irwin Allen-produced submarine TV series was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Voyage_to_the_Bottom_of_the_Sea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea<\/a><\/em>.<\/li><li>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usinflationcalculator.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this inflation calculator<\/a>, $500 million in 1970 would be $3,469,007,731.96 in 2021(!).<\/li><li>Here are the authors the International Symposium of Science Fiction that Nate didn\u2019t mention (all of them hailed from the Soviet Union):<ul><li>Vasilii Pavlovich Berezhnoi<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Yulii Iosifovich Kagarlitskii (aka Julius Kagarlitsky)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ieremei Iudovich Parnov<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Vasilii Dmitrievich Zackharchenko<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Personally, I loved Expo \u201970! Seeing Gamera there was exciting. He even remembered me and gave me a wave. But sadly, all my photos from the event were destroyed when the Messiah 13 Aliens attacked New York. L<\/li><li>Your Dad guarded a moon rock, eh, Nate? That\u2019s impressive, but I have Venus rocks. I\u2019ll show them to you next time you come over to my quarters, Nate.<\/li><li>This is the human washing machine, and I do like this model. \ud83d\ude09<\/li><li>This was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0066456\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">best info<\/a> I could find quickly on <em>Tiger Child<\/em>. And it\u2019s not a nature documentary. It\u2019s loftier than that, it seems.<\/li><li>Here\u2019s an article on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maglev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maglev technology<\/a>. It\u2019s mostly used for trains. If you\u2019ve been to Disneyworld in Florida, you\u2019ve ridden a train that uses it.<\/li><li>Nice catch at the end with Patreon, Ben. In order to donate $3 a day, someone would have to become my intern\u2014which would be nice, actually.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now for the contractually-obligated leftover notes from Nate\u2019s episode prep:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Film (Main Notes)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Hiroshi has the bushiest eyebrows. <em>(He practically has to comb them. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>There\u2019s a nice matting of a long distance live action shot with some toku footage of Gamera.<\/li><li>Jiger is female. Jiger has a giant head. Big head code? She drinks water after awakening. Rarely seen. Jiger doesn\u2019t crawl, unlike other quadrupeds. <em>(\u201cBig head code\u201d? That was a thing in \u201890s video games, right? I know, \u201cOkay, boomer.\u201d \ud83d\ude1b \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>How did Gamera go from flying to swimming in one cut? <em>(Bad editing. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>You know, Jiger, Mothra did that ship-destroying move first. Must be a female kaiju thing. <em>(I\u2019ll pass that observation along to the scientists. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Jiger means \u201cterrible as a demon,\u201d apparently.<\/li><li>Now the \u201cGamera song\u201d has gone from listing planet names to the days of the week. Because. <em>(The original was better. Because it was in my movie, of course. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Gamera has a cheerleading squad. <em>(Lucky bastard! \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Gamera stole the \u201ctail smash\u201d move from Godzilla.<\/li><li>Those x-rays are on display on the Island and used for reference.<\/li><li>These kids just know how to operate the sub. <em>(Well, Masao and I did, too. But, you know, we\u2019re smart. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Unsurprisingly, the English-speaking actors aren\u2019t great.<\/li><li>What does people from Africa getting weak going north and Eskimos getting weak going south have to do with Jiger being weak to sound?<\/li><li>80 metric tons? Gamera\u2019s a lot lighter than basically every Toho kaiju. By a lot. Godzilla is at least a 1,000 times heavier. <em>(Talk about completely different weight classes! \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>The kids yell at Gamera as if he can hear them. Which it seems he can. <em>(Because\u2026psychic? \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Intro by Ragone<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In <em>Shoben Jump Magzaine<\/em>, Jiger was called \u201cMonster X.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Commentary by Edward L. Holland<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Yuasa sought out the child actors in this film.<\/li><li>There was a second monster boom in Japan in 1971.<\/li><li>Jiger\u2019s roar is a variation of Guiron\u2019s.<\/li><li>Yuasa was fond of beer.<\/li><li>Says the film plays out a bit like an Ultraman episode.<\/li><li>Sithantaku, the \u201cEifel Tower of Osaka.\u201d<\/li><li>Story has it that Tsuburyaya sent a letter to Yuasa telling him to tone down the gore in the Gamera films.<\/li><li>Gamera looks like a vinyl toy after being impregnated by Jiger.<\/li><li>They use an \u201copaque projector on steroids\u201d to discuss Gamera\u2019s anatomy.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Galbraith<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>People either think it\u2019s outrageous or \u201croutine.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Toku Topic: Expo \u201870<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Many science fiction writers and artists were involved with the Expo, including:<ul><li>A farcical multi-screen science fiction film created by writer Abe K\u00f5b\u00f5 and filmmaker Teshigahara Hiroshi for the Auto Pavilion.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>\u201cWith its characteristic rhetoric of multi-polar humanism, the text goes on to assert that wisdom to avoid such a dire fate and unlock the \u2018prosperity of mankind\u2019 can be found not in one place but \u2018wherever human beings can be found.\u2019 \u2018If the diverse wisdoms of mankind can be effectively exchanged and [allowed to] mutually stimulate each other,\u2019 the text continues, \u2018a higher level of knowledge can appear, and from the understanding and tolerance between different traditions, we can achieve the harmonious development of a better life for all of mankind.\u2019\u201d<\/li><li>The corporate pavilions, which were dominated by domestic Japanese pavilions, also featured various visions of the future. \u201cThe Mitsubishi Future Pavilion, which was divided into a display of the untamed elemental power of \u2018Japan&#8217;s Nature\u2019 followed by \u2018Japan&#8217;s Sky,\u2019 \u2018Japan&#8217;s Sea,\u2019 and \u2018Japan&#8217;s Earth\u2019 as they would be developed in the twenty-first century: space stations and a weather monitoring and control center in the sky; an underwater city, \u2018marine pasture,\u2019 and power plant in the sea; and a twenty-first century city on land.<\/li><li>The biggest reason Expo &#8217;70 was seen as a &#8220;city of the future&#8221; (<em>mirai no <\/em>toshi) was the \u201cjuxtaposition of innovative architectural forms, including Tange&#8217; s Grand Roof, the low inflated dome of the American Pavilion and aggressively pitched roof of the Soviet Pavilion, and most especially, the contributions of the young Japanese architects associated with the Metabolist movement, including Kikutake Kiyonori&#8217;s Expo Tower and Kurokawa Kish\u00f4&#8217;s Toshiba IHI Pavilion and Takara Beautilion, all interpenetrated by the futuristic transportation infrastructure of monorails and moving sidewalks.\u201d (By the way, the Metabolist movement was a postwar architectural movement in Japan that sought to fuse architectural megastructures with organic growth).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Writing this made me nostalgic for Expo \u201970. I was barely 11 and was very impressionable. I\u2019ve little doubt attending it pushed me toward a career in space and NASA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, next week\u2019s episode marks the beginning of a new chapter for MIFV: \u201cGodzilla Redux.\u201d Nate will be covering the Godzilla films he discussed on\u2026his previous podcast with\u2026someone else. He starts with the beginning, naturally, with <em>Godzilla <\/em>(1954). He\u2019s bringing back the original Tourist crew of Nick Hayden, Timothy Deal, Joe Metter, and Joy Metter. Then we have a special crossover episode with Kaiju Weekly for the soon-to-be-internationally-released anime <em>Godzilla: Singular Point<\/em>. We\u2019re working out the details, but it should be BIG. Then the \u201cYear of Gamera\u201d continues with <em>Gamera vs. Zigra<\/em>, which will feature Kaiju Weekly co-host\/MIFV MAX member Travis Alexander and Atomic Turtle host Matt Noponen. I know Nate dislikes it, but come on! A beautiful woman parades around in a bikini for 15-20 minutes!
