MIFV MAX #16: ‘Shin Ultraman’ Special Report (abridged) | Ft. Daniel DiManna, Damon Noyes, Michael Hamilton, and Guest of Honor Jeff Gomez

Published January 18, 2023

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! While production continues on the last quarter of MIFV season three, I’m sharing this excerpt from the latest MIFV MAX livestream, on which the subject was the finally-released Shin Ultraman. In this portion, we interview the producer of the Ultraman Connection website, Jeff Gomez, who shares why tokusatsu—and especially Ultraman—is important to him. We then move to the work he did to get Shin Ultraman released through Fathom Events, including who was commissioned to make its surprisingly good dub. You’re getting inside info no other podcast has!

A Compassionate Ultraman | One Monstrous Moment: Alpha Edition

Published March 28, 2021

As part of Ryan “The Omni Viewer” Collins’ “One Monstrous Moment: Alpha Edition” to celebrate our favorite moments in kaiju media in anticipation of Godzilla vs. Kong, I’m submitting an entry featuring an unlikely scene from an unlikely series. In this case, from episode eleven of Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero (aka Ultraman Powered). What happens when a henshin hero battles a truly innocent monster? What can we learn about co passion and empathy from this oft-derided Ultra series? Listen to find out!

Music:
–Ultraman Powered/Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero BGM (by Suzuki Kisaburo?)

We’d like to give a shout-out to our MIFV MAX patrons Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton (co-hosts of Kaiju Weekly); Danny DiManna (author/creator of the Godzilla Novelization Project); Eli Harris (elizilla13); Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio); Bex from Redeemed Otaku; and Damon Noyes! Bonus Episode #4: Interview with Ben Chaffins

Published July 29, 2020

Hello, kaiju lovers!

As a special Fifth Wednesday Bonus Episode (which will become a regular feature of the show), I interviewed SciFi Japan writer Ben Chaffins about his new book, Discovering Tokusatsu. In it he chronicles his many quests to get interviews with high-profile people working in tokusatsu filmmaking. You’ll hear about how Ben got his gig at SciFi Japan, why he wrote the book, and how much of a “stan” he is for Ultraman: The Next and Ultraman Nexus (whose special effects director he interviewed for an exclusive chapter in this book).

Oh, and by the way, Ben’s Twitter profile pic is Ultraman Nexus with sunglasses. Deal with it! 😛 Follow Ben on Twitter and Instagram.

We’d like to give a shout-out to our Patreon patrons Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton (cohosts of Kaiju Weekly); Danny DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project); elizilla13; and Chris Cooke (host of One Cross Radio)! Thanks for your support!
