Bonus Episode #16: ‘Space Monster Wangmagwi’ | Ft. Daniel DiManna

In yet another impromptu “bonus” episode, Nate is joined by Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project) to discuss a film that was finally unleashed upon the world by SRS Cinema: Space Monster Wangmagwi. As you can see, this one actually fits the season theme of The Monster Island World Tour. As mentioned in the Yongary episode, this was also released in the “Year of the Kaiju,” 1967, beating Yongary by a few months. But like many South Korean kaiju films, the story around this one exceeds its artistic merits. In its case, it was a “holy grail” of a lost film for kaiju fans; a thing of legend that few ever saw. But thanks to the dogged efforts of Ron Bonk, it’s now readily available. Just prepare yourself for a “rantmaster” about Squirrel (not “Spider”), King of the Kennys!

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 88: ‘Attack of the Crab Monsters’ & ‘Island Claws’ (Ft. Damon Noyes)

I’m writing this the week of the release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Nate is focused on prepping for that and not following up on episode 88, even though it’s an episode of firsts. But I guess two old-school giant crab movies (Attack of the Crab Monsters and Island Claws) just can’t compete with the reunion of cinema’s most iconic kaiju. As I wrote that, I realized why he’s fixated on it. Regardless, he, Kaguya, and I will see the movie together in Seoul. In a rare show of kindness, the Board is even paying for it. They said it’d be “good for business.” I just hope Nate isn’t a cranky “third wheel.” Anyway, here are my crabby notes (ba-dum-tsh!).

  • We have gotten good at wrangling kaiju, Nate. We might want to consider either getting new jobs on the Island or doing it as a side hustle. With my tech and your…uh…your…gaming skills, we’d be unstoppable! Or we can leave it to H.E.A.T. and the EDF Mutants. Yeah, let’s do that.
  • Yes, technically the version of Little Shop of Horrors we covered isn’t a Corman flick. It’s based on his work, but he wasn’t involved in it. But it might be the best thing he ever “did.” 😛
  • Now you like my new mic?
  • B-movie inception?! The world isn’t ready for that! (Even though Nate, Jessica, and I have done that several times for movie night).
  • I don’t know what Nate is smoking, but I looked at Charles Griffith’s credits, and there’s nothing in it that we’re planning later this season—or at all. Unless he confused Forbidden Island with Mysterious Island.
  • I always liked scientists in swimsuits. It was favorite calendar. Miss, er, Doctor July was…well, I can’t say because we have to keep it PG around here.
  • Only Nate would overthink talking crabs.
  • “Crab in a bag” was my favorite childhood prank. When the school bully stole your lunch, he’d get quite the pinch trying to eat my crab meat.
  • Sociopathic Crabs was a great ‘90s metal band. I think their second album was called Carcinisation.
  • “Human eyes.” Wow…that one hurt.
  • I facepalmed at “genderfluid crabs.” We’re going to get letters.
  • I fought ninja crabs once. I don’t want to talk about it.
  • I added the battleship sound in post. You’re welcome, Michael. 😛
  • Radiation is a plot device, not a macguffin, Damon.
  • Groggier than me? There are reasons I packed plenty of coffee for this trip. Have you tried to keep up with Nate? He needs decaf—and he doesn’t even drink coffee!
  • I assure you, Crazy Bernice didn’t save me during the War in Space, as good of a story as that’d be.
  • Yes, sometimes science and I don’t get along. We constantly smack each other around. I violate its laws of physics, and then it kicks me in the butt with them. It’s a love-hate relationship.
  • Ebirah isn’t a crab, Nate! Damon said that, so why do I have to remind you?

Next week (again, good grief!), Daniel DiManna joins us for a bonus episode on another SRS Cinema release: Space Monster Wangmagwi. I still refuse to bow to Spider. Then “Kong Quest” (ba-dum-tsh!) crosses over with Godzilla Redux with the latest MonsterVerse entry, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Our next regular episodes, as Nate mentioned, will be Reptilian (The Monster Island World Tour) and All Monsters Attack (aka Godzilla’s Revenge) for Godzilla Redux.

Until next time, remember…we shall overcome!

Episode 88: ‘Attack of the Crab Monsters’ & ‘Island Claws’ | Ft. Damon Noyes | Patreon Episode

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! Our first Patreon episode of season four—courtesy of executive producer Damon Noyes—is also MIFV’s first double feature and includes our first Roger Corman movie! First, we tackle Corman’s 1957 “classic,” Attack of the Crab Monsters, which could be called a “B-movie to a B-movie.” While it starts off as a typical atomic age creature feature, to Nate’s surprise, it goes full-tilt crazy at the halfway point. Then he and Damon get to Island Claws, a 1980 “pseudo-remake” that is so obscure, the internet barely knows it exists. While it’s technically better than “Corman’s Crabs,” it isn’t as memorable—until Nate and Damon rewrite it live! They top off their discussions with a quick overview of carcinisation…because the future is crabs.

“I Will Not Fight You” | ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ | One Monstrous Moment: Year of the Dragon Edition

With Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire upon us, friend of the podcast Ryan “The Omni Viewer” Collins is holding another “One Monstrous Moment” series, the “Year of the Dragon Edition.” I’m going about as “on brand” with it as you can with a discussion of the ending of Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). I was struck by it when I first saw it, and I’m struck by it now. It’s exemplifies pacifism, the so-called “sigma male,” and a proper understanding of meekness (strength under control). What say you?

Episode 87 Epilogue: “Monster Mash”

Nate and Jimmy fly Uber-Moguera to Panmunjom intent to recapture Yongary, but the Korean kaiju scores a couple lucky hits that disable the mecha’s weapons system. Desperate to find a new tactic, they get unlikely help from an unlikely source: Neil Riebe! His solution: a dance-off! Shenanigans ensue.

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 87: ‘Yongary, Monster from the Deep’ vs. Neil Riebe

Marchand’s March (ha!) has been bleeping busy! The show has practically been weekly. I’d complain, but I enjoy the work too much. Balancing that between maintaining Uber-Moguera and trying to make up with Kaguya (she’s still upset with me, despite my best efforts)—there’s no rest for the Jimmy! But hey, I get to travel the world and visit places like Seoul that I’ve never seen before with my best friend. Oh, and Nate, too, I guess. 😛 Anyway, let’s get into my notes on episode 87 (Yongary, Monster from the Deep vs. Neil Riebe).

  • Apex did me dirty! Walter Simmons was a jerk, and his company has more human rights violations than Amazon! (I’m not bitter at all…).
  • You know, if I could get a spy drone into Hannibal Chau’s film library, I could see if he has the Korean cut of Yongary…but I value my drones far too much. The parts are expensive!
  • You don’t understand: I’ve studied the possibilities of A.I. It’s ruining Star Wars films now with those pseudo-deep fakes, but later…Terminator is the least of our worries! Think I, Robot, only worse. Yikes!
  • “China virus.” Don’t worry, I tested all of us before leaving Hong Kong. It’s not that one.
  • I did find Five Marines on the Korean Film Archive YouTube channel.
  • It wasn’t a treaty that ended the Korean War, Nate—it was an armistice. There’s a big difference. That’s why some argue that the war has never ended and could technically reignite at any point. Scary stuff.
  • Our first Gamera episode was number 32.
  • My girlfriend isn’t a computer, Marchand! Nor an android! She just…spent too much time on the Xilien version of the internet…because they had it first!
  • I used to have an itching flashlight. Kaguya threw it out after I used it on her…for reasons.
  • “Bunker in the hill”? There was another one? 😛
  • Good thing you corrected yourself there, Nate. I have trained you well, young padawan. 😛
  • According to Wikizilla, Jet Jaguar was inexplicably renamed “King Kong” for the West Germany release of Godzilla vs. Megalon, but contrary to popular belief, he wasn’t said to be an ape in a robot suit.
  • I seem to remember meeting a Kenichi Nakagawa once. He told me he moonlighted as a special effects technician. What was his regular job? Top secret.
  • I still have no opinion on the butt bleeding. That is all.
  • I approve of Yongary vs. Tofu Fury. I approve of anything vs. Tofu Fury. I will build Tofu Fury!

Next week (good grief… “next week”!), we have a Patreon-sponsored episode with executive producer Damon Noyes—and it’s a double feature: Attack of the Crab Monsters and Island Claws. Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 86: ‘The Whale God’ vs. Daniel DiManna vs. Elijah Thomas

We’re getting a lot of impromptu episodes this season. Well, two at the moment. As far as I know, there won’t be any more added to the schedule. I don’t know how much more we can handle, especially when we have to split our time between the show, our regular jobs, and kaiju wrangling. Plus, I have a girlfriend…who’s upset with me. (Damnit!) Anyway, I took a lot of notes on episode 86 (The Whale God), which I’m sure will do nothing but shamelessly promote SRS Cinema’s release of this film. (I need to be paid for all this free publicity).

  • Never question what I know about robots and piloting! I’ve watched every Gundam series five times. (Okay, maybe I’ve watched five Gundam series once…).
  • You goofballs are such SRS shills in this. I hope you got paid for it. Oh, wait….
  • Must you talk about whale racism? We’re going to get letters from the Gorilla Whales…again.
  • “Dickatry.” Someone call Merriam-Webster; we have a new word for them.
  • The shenanigans Alf and I got into…I wish I could talk about them.
  • The puns only got worse after the Entertaining Info Dump. They would kill some people.
  • Don’t forget Warning from Space, Marchand! That was a “kaiju” film before this!
  • That was the weirdest wandering accent I’ve ever heard. How the hell do you go from Davey Jones to Sean Connery?
  • Killing a whale to become Takashi Shimura is freaking weird, man! The sad thing is there are people in the Godzilla fandom who would try it.
  • I might’ve ripped a voice box out of a Five Nights at Freddy’s animatronic. It was my Predator-style prize!
  • What did William Hughes do? I don’t know. I couldn’t find anything on him. I did find other actors named William Hughes on IMDb, though.
  • Toyo’s glaring reminds me of angry Kaguya. That’s all I’ve been seeing for a few weeks now. She’s slowly coming around…I think.
  • The definitions/descriptions I found for jidaigeki films included:
    • “Jidaigeki (時代劇) is a genre of film, television, video game, and theatre in Japan. Literally meaning “period dramas”, they are most often set during the Edo period of Japanese history, from 1603 to 1868. Some are set much earlier—Portrait of Hell, for example, is set during the late Heian period—and the early Meiji era is also a popular setting.” (Wikipedia)
    • So, I hate to disappoint Elijah, but I don’t think his new wife, Godzilla Minus One, counts.
  • I’m the studliest guy in every room I enter. Even Glen admitted that when he trained me at NASA.
  • I do have Twit-X. Perhaps I’ll check on Elijah there. Someone has to keep him in check. Marchand is failing at that. (Although, he did get smacked in the face by Kujira Kami after the show).
  • I downloaded and added a proper drum roll to our soundboard.
  • Sometimes Nate and I have fact check races. He won this time. This time….
  • “Kujira Kami” not “Gami,” Nate.
  • Yes, don’t blow hole my mind. (ba-dum-tsh!)
  • This episode might hold the record for most rimshots and sad trombones.
  • I’m definitely changing that Wi-Fi password. We can’t have randos in Seoul hacking our Wi-Fi. We need the bandwidth to produce the show and catch kaiju.
  • There is, in fact, a Korean Coast Guard.

In our next episode, we start the South Korean leg of our World Tour with Yongary, Monster from the Deep (1967), which will feature special guest Neil Riebe (aka Yongary’s biggest fan). Then we have season four’s first Patreon-sponsored episode (which, as Nate said, could be called “Corman’s Crabs”) with executive producer Damon Noyes—and it’s a double feature: Attack of the Crab Monsters and Island Claws. What Nate failed to mention was Danny will return later this month for a bonus episode on Space Monster Wangmagwi. Another SRS title? We need to start charging for this publicity! Then the “Kong Quest” (ba-dum-tsh!) returns when Legendary releases the latest MonsterVerse entry, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Until next time, remember…we shall overcome!

Episode 86: ‘The Whale God’ vs. Daniel DiManna vs. Elijah Thomas

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In yet another impromptu episode (because reasons), Nate is joined by Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project) and Elijah Thomas (Kaiju Conversation) to discuss the semi-obscure Daiei proto-kaiju film, The Whale God. Released in 1962, it was largely unseen outside of Japan until it was released by SRS Cinema this past January. The boys unpack the tremendous talent behind and in front of the camera–including Takashi Shimura, Kojiro Hongo, and Akira Ifukube, among others–its connections to Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, and how it uses elements of J-horror to create a potent period drama. The Toku Topic, thanks to Danny’s in-depth research, is Japanese whaling. Then stay tuned after the credits to hear Elijah try to touch the Whale God!

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 85 – Godzilla: The Series | ‘Monster Wars’ | Ft. The Cel Cast | Godzilla Redux

In case anyone is wondering: Kaguya and I are fine. I know there are rumors going around that we broke up or were on the rocks. We’ve talked things over. It took a while to help her understand some things about how human “cultural frameworks,” as she calls them, work, but she seems to get it now…sorta. Am I still in the doghouse? Yeah. I’m giving her a bit of space. But I have to say, to paraphrase Jack Driscoll, “I think I…” Ahem! Anyway, let’s get into my notes on Episode 85 (Godzilla: The Series – “Monster Wars”), which featured the return of the “cartoon guys,” Drew Dodgen and Jacob Heron, from The Cel Cast.

  • The air conditioning will get fixed…eventually. This walking cobbled-together junk pile has far more pressing issues to fix…like the CD player.
  • As cute as D33-D117 (Deedlit?) is for an AI…Kaguya would kill me! She almost did after we recaptured Utam Goliathon!
  • MIFV’s previous Godzilla: The Series coverage was Episode 45 (“New Family” and “Deadloch”) and Bonus Episode 11 (“The Cameron Winter Trilogy”).
  • I think Drew was referring to Winter’s episodes of the show being before “Monster Wars.” He’s correct…about one. Winter’s first episode was episode five while “Monster Wars” was episodes 15-17.
  • The Martians didn’t know Earth’s bacteria was fatal to them…or was it a bio-weapon? That’s what Alan Moore would want you to believe. I know how much you love that, Nate. 😛
  • These aliens never win beauty pageants and hate being compared to the Harkonnens. Trust me, I’ve run into a few of them.
  • I asked the scientists if Zilla Jr. purrs. They looked at me like I was a weirdo. I am, but still, that was rude.
  • Wingnut?! #DeepCut
  • “Draczilla” That’s a terrifying concept. I’ll tell the Board to ban anyone from Transylvania from visiting the Island.
  • I fought Frussians once. I don’t want to talk about it.
  • Lies! You’ve kink-shamed me!
  • “Play it again, Sam,” is a misquoted line, as Nate explained. While it’s associated with Humphrey Bogart, something like it, “Play it, Sam,” was actually said by Ingrid Bergman.
  • Inspirational temporal displacement? That’s an oxymoron if I ever heard one. And yet another reason I hate time travel.
  • Paris has been attacked by kaiju, but only in Godzilla stories. Specifically, Destroy All Monsters, this three-parter, Godzilla: Final Wars, Godzilla Unleashed: Final Smash, and Godzilla: Rulers of Earth. (Fun fact: there’s a Kaiju No. 8 mural in Paris).
  • Admittedly, I didn’t have much time to search for kaiju attacks on Washington, D.C. (and my internet searches kept bringing up very different sorts of attacks), but much to Nate’s chagrin, the one I did find is an Asylum movie:
  • I might have something to do with the shield D33-D117 found around D.C.…I don’t want to talk about it.
  • You’d be surprised how many trailer park aliens there are in the galaxy. Poverty is universal.
  • We don’t talk about mushrooms on MIFV. For very good reasons.
  • Popcorn ball, Nate, not cornball.
  • Occam’s razor > technobabble. So, I’m with Monique in this case.
  • It’s always too soon for Firefly.
  • I think I met Queen Bleep once. I don’t want to talk about it.
  • “Nilla”? As funny as that is, Dr. Tatopoulos won’t approve that name.
  • The years for crab movies are correct, Nate.
  • It’s not often I’m left speechless about crabs. (Although, I’m thinking of a different type of crabs…).

We’re going to be busy in March at MIFV. We have another impromptu episode (hopefully), which will go over the just-released The Whale God, a semi-obscure Daiei film, with Daniel DiManna and Elijah Thomas. Then we get back to the World Tour with our first South Korean film, Yongary, Monster from the Deep (1967) with special guest Neil Riebe. We punctuate the month with season four’s first Patreon-sponsored episode courtesy of executive producer Damon Noyes, which will be our first double feature: Attack of the Crab Monsters and Island Claws. From our first Roger Corman flick to an almost-unknown pseudo-remake.

Until next time, remember…we shall overcome!
