Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 60: John LeMay vs. ‘THEM!’

Nate’s not the only one who’s way behind on his podcast duties. I have metric ton of notes from past episodes—or so it feels. But contractual obligations must be fulfilled! My New Year’s resolution is to get my blogs caught up. To save time, I’ll be sharing the notes I jotted down during the broadcast and including a PDF of Nate’s uncut notes. I won’t be editing out the portions he discussed on each episode; not until I get caught up.

But given that I was in jail for a while, I had nothing better to do than compile these.

So, bear with me, starting with episode 60 (THEM!), which featured by my former flame war nemesis, John LeMay:

  • Matango boosters are important, guys—unless you’re Dr. Dourif. That weirdo is an example of immersion therapy gone horribly wrong. I’m amazed he isn’t a supervillain yet.
  • It’s “Meganulon” or “Meganuron,” John. But I can understand. It’s the “L” vs. “R” pronunciation confusion with Japanese. But I still expected better from you!
  • I hate Matango brain fog! It’s the worst! Trust me, I know. I had to tend to those psychedelic mutants once on Halloween a few years ago. All I got out of it was a vision of Kumi Mizuno…at least, I thought it was her. Or was it a premonition of Kaguya?
  • Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and Gorgo did, in fact, have the same director: Eugène Lourié.
  • I once had to battle a Kamacuras with an American flamethrower. That was mostly because the Russian flamethrower I was given first didn’t work. And because Monster Island zookeeper, Ricky, didn’t know what he was doing. Who hires these people? He’s gotten better, but I’d rather not wrangle monsters with dangerous equipment.
  • “Japanese” not “kaiju,” Nate. Professional radio host there.
  • Apparently, ants do go to war. They fight over territory and to defend their queen.
  • Nate is Russian spy confirmed. That accent is too good. Have some fun in the sun in a Siberian gulag! Got a Solzhenitsyn book you can read?
  • I did some digging, but I didn’t see anything about the ant puppets from THEM! still existing today. I could be wrong, though. We have the real things on the Island, but I’d rather deal with a prop. Speaking of which…
  • I killed a giant fire ant once. I don’t want to talk about it.
  • Michael does have an explosive temper. If you heard what I recorded of him off the air…more people than Kaiju Kim would cancel him!
  • I meant to fact check John’s Trinity nuclear test story involving his grandparents…but I forgot what I was fact-checking, and I don’t have time to re-listen to the episode. Here’s an article on the event: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_(nuclear_test).
  • Marchand deprived me of work looking up Beast of Yucca Flats! I don’t get paid enough for this!

Episode 73 – ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie’ | Ft. The Cel Cast

(This episode was largely recorded and written before the tragic news of Jason David Frank’s death).

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In what you could call the perfect crossover between their podcasts, MIFV MAX members Drew and Jacob of The Cel Cast sponsor a discussion of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie. It has animated kaiju in it—they’re just bad CGI robots. But the real star of this film, like other pop culture blockbusters in 1995, was the villain Ivan Ooze (played by Paul Freeman), who steals every scene and eats all the scenery. If you’ve heard Nate discuss this on one of his other podcasts, The Power Trip, this will be an expansion on what he said there, particularly on the subject of the hero’s journey. Too bad for Nate and his co-hosts, their discussion is interrupted by a certain snarky bonehead.

The night before the broadcast, Nate journals about getting voicemails from Karone—an actual Power Ranger—and Raymund—who keeps claiming he was a Ranger. After the broadcast, Nate goes to a special “thank you for your service” meet-and-greet being held in honor of the recently retired Tommy Oliver. But an old foe of Tommy’s crashes the party.

This episode is dedicated in loving memory to Jason David Frank.

The prologue and epilogue, “Return of the Green Rangers,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Michael Hamilton. “Rito Calls” written by Nathan Marchand.

Episode 72: Record All Monsters vs. ‘Colossal’

Published November 17, 2022

Hello, kaiju lovers! Today on “Ameri-kaiju,” we get artsy with the indie film Colossal, starring Anne Hathaway. Robert and Courtney from the Record All Monsters podcast stop by to have a thoughtful discussion on this unique kaiju film where the monsters are psychic projections of the main characters. While it’s a comedy, it touches on some heavy subjects, like alcoholism and narcissism. All three hosts share personal stories connected to those subjects. While some commentators have said that the film is about domestic abuse, Nate disagrees. So instead, today’s Toku Topic is on the psychology of inner demons because every character in Colossal is wrestling with one.

Beforehand, Cameron Winter pays Nate a visit in Nate’s prestigious media master office. Winter asks Nate if he knows anything about Jessica helping to free the Ymir—and to maintain his cover, Nate reluctantly says she conspired to do so. Afterward, Nate and Jet Jaguar go to the Heat Seeker and meet H.E.A.T.’s techie, Randy, who sends the robot N.I.G.E.L. to spy on Winter’s operations on the Beta Site. There they make a surprise discovery that’s more than they bargained for, and now Jet must save them.

The prologue and epilogue, “Trespassing,” was written by Nathan Marchand.

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In a fun little “sequel” to MIFV’s glorious Pacific Rim episode, Nate is joined by the co-host of The Drift Space podcast, Jack “GMan” Hudgens, to discuss a sequel Nate has hated since seeing it in a theater: Pacific Rim: Uprising. Nate didn’t want to have an episode on this film, but when he saw an opportunity for a Fifth Wednesday Bonus Episode, he decided to bring Jack, a stalwart defender of the film, to convince him it has merit. And he makes a valiant effort, going so far as to compare it to Jun Fukuda’s Godzilla films! Does Jack succeed at changing Nate’s mind? Listen to find out!

Episode 71: ‘Invasion of Astro-Monster’ | Ft. The Dapper Man | Godzilla Redux

Hello, kaiju lovers! Godzilla Redux is in full gear with one of Big G’s most quintessential films—and Jimmy From NASA’s personal favorite, because reasons—Invasion of Astro-Monster (aka Monster Zero and Godzilla vs. Monster Zero). For this occasion, Nate is joined the Dapper Man himself, Kevin Joshua Burnham, who is a YouTuber, the co-host of The Bottom Shelf podcast, and a longtime fan of MIFV. Everyone’s favorite angry Irishman dives deep into this film with Nate, discussing its making, its cast, and how it showcases the Japanese’s very different sensibilities when it comes to alien invasion stories. Spoiler warning: the Xiliens aren’t anti-American symbols.

Before the broadcast, Jimmy tells Nate he has something he needs to show in his garage after the show. Afterward, Jimmy shows him the “museum piece” Cameron Winter bribed gifted him with: a Xilien saucer. But the big secret is what—or rather, who—is inside.

Episode 70: The Drifters vs. ‘Pacific Rim’

Hello, kaiju lovers! Nate has been waiting for this Ameri-kaiju episode for a long time—he gets to discuss one of his favorite films: Pacific Rim! He’s joined by the three co-hosts of The Drift Space podcast—returning guests Jack “GMan” Hudgens and J.R. Viller, plus Jack’s sister, Rebecca—to gush about how much they love it. Guillermo del Toro’s masterful tribute to both tokusatsu and anime is a movie that is unabashedly itself with its archetypal but strong characters, incredible worldbuilding, and mind-blowing special effects. But beneath the beyond-cool chassis beats the heart of a grossly underestimated story of surprising depth. If you don’t already love Pacific Rim, Nate and the Drifters will change your mind!

Beforehand, Nate discovers data files for an abandoned ad campaign for an unknown kaiju named “Chimera.” After the broadcast, as you undoubtedly heard, a mysterious kaiju attacked the Island but was killed by the Drifters in their Jaeger, Bouncing Betty. Nate’s live broadcast of that battle is included here.

MIFV 3rd Anniversary Livestream – The War in Space | Ft. Jimmy From NASA

Published September 26, 2022

Hello, kaiju lovers! This is the audio from a special livestream Nate held to celebrate three years of podcasting on Monster Island. So, of course, his guest co-host had to be his intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA. And also, of course, their topic had to be 1977’s The War in Space (aka “The Jimmy From NASA Story”). Unfortunately, while Jimmy’s mic worked (he doesn’t sound like a droid!), his camera didn’t. Oh, well. Amidst an info dump on Toho’s attempt at Star Wars, Nate and Jimmy play an MIFV trivia game to give away fabulous prizes to fans in the chat—including one where they give their best “how did Jimmy survive the War in Space?” theories. Also, Jimmy faces his PTSD demons. It was…emotional, to say the least.

Another week without an MIFV episode, I know. There are several recorded and in post-production, which has taken longer than I expected.
