Monster Conversation: Harryhausen Annual #5 – ‘One Million Years B.C.’ | MIFV x Kaiju Conversation

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! And happy birthday, Ray Harryhausen! And Nate and Elijah, too. Yes, they’re back for their annual crossover, and this year in their reverse order coverage of Ray’s filmography, they’ve reached an outlier: One Million Years B.C. (1967). While it has a cinematographer and director Ray had worked with, this wasn’t produced by Charles H. Schneer or distributed by Columbia Pictures. No, this is a Hammer Film and a remake of a 1940 movie starring Lon Chaney Jr. It made Raquel Welch an overnight star and sex symbol (much to her chagrin).Not only is it one of the British studio’s most successful films, it might be the most iconic dinosaur film predating Jurassic Park (see MIFV episode 79). Nate and Elijah get into all the nitty-gritty of this prehistoric epic—including the censored cuts made to the U.S. version—in this sensational celebration!

Episode 109: ‘Terror of Mechagodzilla’ | Ft. Jack “GMan” Hudgens and Elijah Thomas | Godzilla Redux

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! “Godzilla Redux” kicks off with not one but two “gatekeepers” in the kaiju fandom: Jack “GMan” Hudgens and Elijah Thomas (Kaiju Conversation). They along with Nate spend nearly four hours(!) talking about why they effing love the final Showa series film, Terror of Mechagodzilla. It was Nate and Elijah’s first G-film and is one of Jack’s perennial favorites. While many regard it as Ishiro Honda’s weakest Godzilla film and barely give it more credit than the rest of the 1970s G-films, your hosts unpack a laundry list of deep themes and potent symbols. They sing the praises of the wonderful script by Yukiko Takayama (the only woman to write a full Godzilla screenplay), the exciting explosions of Teruyoshi Nakano (who considered this some of his best work), the grossly underrated kaiju Titanosaurus, and the nuanced performance of Akihiko Hirata as Dr. Mafune, among many other things. No stone is left unturned in this epic discussion! Then in the most entertaining Patreon shout-outs segment ever of all time, a certain Mr. Trump (by way of Elijah) appears….

Monster Conversation: Harryhausen Annual #4 – ‘The Valley of Gwangi’ | MIFV x Kaiju Conversation

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! And Happy Birthday, Ray! Nate and Elijah once again celebrate their birthdays by celebrating Ray Harryhausen’s birthday with another deep dive into the stopmotion master’s filmography: The Valley of Gwangi. This 1969 dinosaur epic combined the monster movie and western at a time when both genres were past their primes. It failed at the box office, but it has since become a cult classic, and it’s no wonder why. Cowboys wrangling dinosaurs, baby! While it aped (pun intended) King Kong (1933), it was Ray’s loving tribute to his mentor, Willis O’Brien, who wanted to make this film two decades earlier. It has some of Ray’s best work but also some underdeveloped characters. Where does it rank in Nate’s and Elijah’s lists of Harryhausen films? Listen to find out!

Monster Conversation Harryhausen Annual #3: ‘The Golden Voyage of Sinbad’

In Nate and Elijah’s epic triple birthday celebration with Ray Harryhausen (“Yours, Mine, and Ray’s”), they continue their annual crossover with The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973). While they’re going in reverse chronological order, they agree with this is a “step up” from Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, which they discussed last year. It helps that it has the incredible Tom Baker (of Doctor Who fame) as the villain and the eye candy that is Caroline Munro. The film also has a cameo by Robert Shaw (Quint from Jaws) in a Shakespearean role. Nate and Elijah discuss how the film reflects changing attitudes toward racial and gender equality in the early 1970s and the symbolic freedom of the sea. They even get into a couple of “Toku Topics,” like the literary origins of Sinbad the Sailor and a lawsuit this film was a part of.

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 90: ‘Reptilian’ vs. Elijah Thomas

I made a rare mistake in this episode. I accidentally hit the broadcast button while Nate was finalizing his prep. So, some candid moments were heard by the Kaiju Lovers. He was a little embarrassed, but I’ve heard no complaints. But then Nate messed with me back by spending way too much time in the “green room” with Elijah for way too long. At least the MIFV MAX members on Patreon will be happy. (I just wish Kaguya was happier with me…). Anyway, let’s get into my notes on episode 90 (Reptilian).

  • Uber-Moguera is my happy place…because Kaguya’s stuck with me! And I built it.
  • Be glad I even included a green room. It’s cramped in this mecha! (Which I like when it comes to my cabin…heh heh!)
  • I didn’t correct Elijah at first because I didn’t want to be gatekept.
  • 120,000, Nate. Not 120.
  • I don’t think Bud Black was a film journalist, Elijah. He was a photojournalist. Unless you’re saying he’s a journalist in a film.
  • The director of House, Obayashi’s, first name is Nobuhiko.
  • You two were on it this episode before I corrected you; especially Elijah. Game recognizes game, Littlest Gatekeeper.
  • No one likes the NSIA. They were always jealous of NASA. Don’t get me started on my counterpart, Jimmy from NSIA, though. I hate that guy! He’s even more annoying than Jimmy From NASADA. (Why are there Jimmys at every space agency?)
  • Bong Joon-ho’s first film was Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000).
  • Elijah is right: I am a god and a chad. In that order. Just ask the people of the Planet Zimbob. I’m still worshipped there to this day.
  • How’d I catch Yonggary? It’s simple, really. You see <REDACTED>

Episode 90: ‘Reptilian’ vs. Elijah Thomas | The Monster Island World Tour

In what might be the most subversive and inspirational episode of MIFV yet, Elijah Thomas (Kaiju Conversation) joins Nate to discuss the infamous South Korean “kaiju” (notice the air quotes?) movie, Reptilian. This is, in fact, a “remake” of Yongary, Monster from the Deep, and it’s often called “The Room of kaiju films.” But Elijah says it’s more than that. He even goes so far as to say that if it wasn’t for this movie, the world wouldn’t have BTS or Squid Game. How? Listen to find out!
