Again. But that\u2019s what happens when someone lets Barugon out of the kaiju zone on Monster Island and MIBOD (the Board) tasks you with recovering him and installing a new fail-safe in the security system. Mechani-Kong Mk. 2 and I have been busy. Sadly, Jet Jaguar is going through a weird retro phase and was too busy modding himself in my garage to help. However, I\u2019ve finally found some downtime to get this blog written and posted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My notes\/corrections\/riffs for <a href=\"https:\/\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/10\/episode-34-the-msties-vs-gamera-vs-barugon-feat-joe-and-joy-metter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">episode 34<\/a> on, conveniently (hmm\u2026), <em>Gamera vs. Barugon<\/em> are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I\u2019ve yet to test the shielding against the wrathful lightning of otakus. We have new shielding coming in next month, supplied by Solstice Technologies. I\u2019ve been assured that it can withstand even Godzilla\u2019s atomic breath.<\/li><li>Executive produced by Gamera? While I know none of his own movies were produced by him, there are rumors he might be an uncredited producer on <em>Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em>, but that might only be so he can rub his new \u201cking of the monsters\u201d title in those two\u2019s faces.<\/li><li>I may or may not be on the \u201cfeed to Barugon list\u201d? Ever seen the post-credits scene in <em>Pacific Rim<\/em>? I did that before Hannibal Chau. Long story.<\/li><li>How to say, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Favors\/comments\/362h0m\/request_i_need_a_japanese_translation_of_i_pity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I pity the fool<\/a>!\u201d in Japanese. (Mic drop).<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thiamine_deficiency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beriberi<\/a> is a thiamine (or vitamin B1) deficiency. It doesn\u2019t sound pleasant.<\/li><li>The psychiatric admission during the War in Space wasn\u2019t as high as the New Guinea Campaign, but it was potent. Lovecraftian fear of the void is real. Trust me, I know. I may have met an elder god once in my travels in space.<\/li><li>It\u2019s Chris \u201cCook\u201d not \u201ccookie,\u201d Joe. Also, \u201cotaku\u201d isn\u2019t part of his name. However, I lay this goof on Nate because he gave you a poorly written note. I\u2019m sure Chris loves cookies, though, and might even start a second podcast about cookies.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, for Nate\u2019s leftover notes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Movie<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Awkward jump cut in early scene because a prop fell down.<\/li><li>The color in this does look nice.<\/li><li>Here\u2019s a horrific death for the kids. Not really. But it\u2019s the fastest five minutes ever. <em>(This is why I don\u2019t like time travel. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Grenades with fuses instead of pins? Okay. Never seen anything like that. <em>(Actually, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grenade#Early_grenades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">old grenades<\/a>\u2014as in Civil War era\u2014did have fuses. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>I just realized this guy has a farmer\u2019s tan. Nice detail. <em>(You\u2019d notice because you have one, Nate. You need a little more time on the Monsterland beaches. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Barugon\u2019s birth is actually pretty effective. It\u2019s weird and creepy and even a bit gross. Yuasa said it was one of his favorite scenes.<\/li><li>Barugon appears about 41 minutes in.<\/li><li>The random narrator didn\u2019t need to explain what was happening on screen.<\/li><li>\u201cWe have to strike the monster out of range of its tongue attack.\u201d (Horrible paraphrase).<\/li><li>Gamera finally returns almost 53 minutes in!<\/li><li>I think Gamera is getting high on Barugon\u2019s breath. <em>(The scientists on the Island tested that theory. Barugon\u2019s breath isn\u2019t a narcotic, thankfully. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em>\u00a0<\/li><li>Here\u2019s a science lesson for you! <em>(What science lesson was that? That kaiju like shiny things? \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Did everyone forget about Gamera this whole time? <em>(You definitely can\u2019t now! \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>I can see the wires as Barugon dies. <em>(I could use those wires now! \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Commentary:<ul><li>The flashback wasn\u2019t in the film originally. Added for those who didn\u2019t see it.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The screenplay originally had the meteor change the capsule\u2019s course and it re-entered the atmosphere.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Kurobe Dam is 610 feet tall and Japan\u2019s largest.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The <em>koto<\/em> is the national instrument of Japan. <em>(I took some lessons for it as a kid while living in Japan for a while. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Gamera originally appeared before Barugon was born. Onodera saw the turtle flying, dropped the opal, and it fell under a lamp.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The reverence for the war dead\u2019s bones is because not returning them is believed to break family lines and bring bad luck.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The Sandy Frank dub mistranslated the line about Barugon\u2019s weakness to water. In the Japanese dialogue, it\u2019s stated he can\u2019t <em>live long<\/em> in water. <em>(It\u2019s still dubious. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Lake Biwa is the largest freshwater lake in Japan.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Other factoids<ul><li>Director Noriaki Yuasa was replaced with Shigeo Tanaka, one of Daiei\u2019s top directors who helmed the prestige picture, <em>The Great Wall<\/em> (and WWII propaganda films for Daiei). Yuasa became special effects director.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>It was released on double bill with <em>Daimajin<\/em> in 1966 during Japan\u2019s \u201cGolden Week\u201d and was considered a major event.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nate continues to improve his skills at sharing his notes on the Toku Topics. He got through all of them in this episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next week we cover a <em>very<\/em> different film with the banned <em>Prophecies of Nostradamus<\/em>, which will feature the return of my former social media nemesis, John LeMay. That film was buried deep in the back of the Vault right next to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/index.php\/2019\/12\/25\/episode-7-half-human-mini-analysis\/\">Half-Human<\/a><\/em>. Then the \u201cYear of Gamera\u201d continues with what might be the most famous (not \u201cinfamous\u201d\u2014that\u2019s later) entry in the Titanic Terrapin\u2019s classic movie series: <em>Gamera vs. Gyaos<\/em>.
