(Long story I\u2019m not at liberty to tell).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless, here\u2019s my first \u201cJimmy\u2019s Notes\u201d blog for season two and the Year of Gamera. While the movie was \u201cfreakishly mediocre,\u201d as Nate said, <a href=\"http:\/\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/index.php\/2021\/01\/13\/episode-32-the-msties-vs-gamera-the-giant-monster\/\">the episode itself<\/a> was good\u2026despite some all-too-convenient Board mandates. That being said, I did make a few notes, as I always do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Mysterian invasion was in 1957, not 1956, Nate.<\/li><li>I\u2019m happy to report that Toshio \u201cKenny\u201d Sakurai is still alive. In fact, he was a guest of honor, along with Asagi Kusanagi, at the recently-held Gamera: King of the Monsters Banquet here on the Island.<\/li><li>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chibi_(slang)#:~:text=Chibi%20(%E3%81%A1%E3%81%B3%20or%20%E3%83%81%E3%83%93)%20is,stubby%20limbs%20and%20oversized%20heads.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a>, \u201c<em>Chibi<\/em>&nbsp;is derived from the verb \u79bf\u3073\u308b (<em>chibiru<\/em>), which means \u2018to wear out and become shorter\u2019 (the tip of something).&nbsp;<em>Chibi-debu<\/em>&nbsp;(\u3061\u3073\u30c7\u30d6 or \u30c1\u30d3\u30c7\u30d6) is used to describe something or someone that is both short and chubby.&nbsp;<em>Chibi<\/em>&nbsp;can be translated as \u2018little\u2019 (e.g.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chibi_Maruko-chan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chibi Maruko-chan<\/a>, which means Little Miss Maruko), but it is not used the same way as&nbsp;<em>chiisana<\/em>&nbsp;[\u5c0f\u3055\u306a] and&nbsp;<em>chiisai<\/em>&nbsp;[\u5c0f\u3055\u3044] (&#8216;tiny&#8217;, &#8216;small&#8217;, &#8216;little&#8217; in Japanese), but rather \u2018cute.\u2019\u201d<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Michiko+Sugata&amp;rlz=1C1GGRV_enUS751US751&amp;oq=Michiko+Sugata&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57j69i61l2.280j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michiko Sugata<\/a>, who played \u201cKenny\u2019s\u201d sister, was actually 20 when she was in this movie, so it wasn\u2019t unreasonable to pass her off as a teenager.<\/li><li>\u201cPrecocious adult,\u201d am I? I guess that\u2019s how you get labeled when you\u2019ve been in the U.S. Air Force and NASA and built two giant robots. Don\u2019t be hatin\u2019! \ud83d\ude1b<\/li><li>Oh, that kid who teamed with Gamera to pull pranks on the other kaiju was annoying! I think his name was Kevin.<\/li><li>Actually, yes, turtles and tortoises can flip themselves off their backs without using inexplicable jets in their shells. Read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/2007\/071016\/full\/news.2007.170.html#:~:text=The%20shells%20of%20some%20tortoises,tip%20over%20and%20right%20itself.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/li><li>I did a little digging and consulted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/John-LeMay\/e\/B003KTW83K%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John LeMay<\/a>, but I can\u2019t find anything anywhere that says \u201cCommander Curly\u201d and the other American soldiers were played by real U.S. servicemen stationed in Japan. That was sometimes done by Toho, though.<\/li><li>Nate, we only yell at each other every other workday. \ud83d\ude1b<\/li><li>According to my sources, the \u201cfreeze bombs\u201d were <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cadmium#Nuclear_fission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cadmium<\/a>, which isn\u2019t quite the same. Sorta.<\/li><li>But freeze bombs are cool! <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/hqdefault.jpg?resize=480%2C360\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/hqdefault.jpg?w=480 480w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/hqdefault.jpg?resize=300%2C225 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Yes, I am not <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Montgomery_Scott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scotty<\/a>, but I\u2019m working to become a Scotty.<\/li><li>The trailer Nate mentioned is actually for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ibZshoVgkCE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gamera films streaming on the Arrow Channel<\/a>, not the blu-ray set. #Details<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And now for Nate\u2019s first batch of leftover notes in 2021:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Movie<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Director Noriaki Yuasa was rotund, jolly, and \u201ccuddly\u201d and relatively untested. <em>(Throw a beard on him, and he could be Santa Claus. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Starts in North Pole like <em>Beast <\/em>(<em>from 20,000 Fathoms<\/em>). Nuclear test awakens monster like <em>Beast<\/em>. The difference is there are natives (Eskimos), which was a common trope in kaiju films, and the bombing came from Cold War issues. Implicitly Soviet bomb.<\/li><li>I can see the wires on the planes quite easily. <em>(The drawbacks of hi-def. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>They waste no time and have Gamea show up in five minutes.<\/li><li>I don\u2019t understand why the Eskimos speak English. Interestingly, the chief is wearing a crucifix. Implied Catholic?<\/li><li>The kids run when Gamera is mentioned. Not bad. \u201cWe\u2019re being jammed!\u2019 says the radio operator. By who? Gamera? Soviets? Aliens? <em>(All of the above? \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>The foreign newspapers all say, \u201cGamela.\u201d <em>(Japanese swaps L\u2019s and R\u2019s. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Old drunk says Gamera is a \u201cwill-o-wisp.\u201d His scene is too dark (lighting).<\/li><li>Gamera is a ninja. He magically disappears for a second. <em>(He is the true fifth Ninja Turtle. But is he a teenager? Maybe that\u2019s why he never got in. That and not being named after a Renaissance artist. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Don\u2019t worry, Toshio, you won\u2019t get cancer from the radioactive turtle! <em>(Actually, he didn\u2019t! \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Toshio built Chibi a little rock house. And pseudo-beach music plays. Oh yeah. Chibi is totally a mutant turtle now. Yep. <em>(Nope. The scientists have confirmed Gamera isn\u2019t Chibi. -Jimmy).<\/em><\/li><li>The airplane pilot has radio trouble. Is this one of Gamera\u2019s superpowers? Radio interference?<\/li><li>\u201cBy boring.\u201d Describes the movie.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/hqdefault-1.jpg?resize=480%2C360\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/hqdefault-1.jpg?w=480 480w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/hqdefault-1.jpg?resize=300%2C225 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>That\u2019s great. Shoot the big turtle in his shell. Definitely his weak spot.<\/li><li>What a wonderful name for a hot springs resort: Hell\u2019s Rock. Is it run by a Mr. Morningstar? <em>(As in the <a href=\"https:\/\/dc.fandom.com\/wiki\/Lucifer_Morningstar_(New_Earth)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comic book character<\/a>? \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Oh, Tokyo Tower. A kaiju\u2019s favorite target.<\/li><li>Toshio says Gamera attacks because he\u2019s lonely and has no friends. So, he\u2019s the goth kid in high school? <em>(More like the nerd in high school. I should know. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>So, Gamera was eating radiation before it was cool. Take that, Godzilla?<\/li><li>Gamera says, \u201cI\u2019m crashing your party! These reporter characters are still here. I forgot about them because the movie forgot about them.<\/li><li>How is this kid getting access to this military operation? <em>(This happened a few times when I was in the Air Force. It was part of a short-lived \u201ckid consultant\u201d program inspired by Gamera kids. I may or may not have played a part in forming it. \u2013Jimmy)<\/em><\/li><li>Gamera is going to smash those bath toys.<\/li><li>\u201cYummy fire!\u201d<\/li><li>Toshio may have gotten Gamera to leave. Then the crazy reporter starts lighting up buildings to get Gamera to come back. Then everyone goes full-tilt arsonist!<\/li><li>A countdown in English. <a href=\"http:\/\/monsterislandfilmvault.com\/index.php\/2020\/04\/22\/episode-15-battle-in-outer-space-with-luke-jaconetti\/\">Like Luke said<\/a>, it must be a thing in Japan.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Toku Topic: Energy Consumption in Japan<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Energy use and energy independence in Japan<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Currently, Japan gets 10% of its energy from renewables, with the Fourth Strategic Energy Plan setting the goal of increasing that to 24% by 2030. Japan intends to invest over $700 billion in renewables over the next decade or so. Their primary renewable is hydroelectricity, with 1,198 small hydropower plants supplying 6.6% of the total hydropower. Unfortunately, these small plants are expensive to operate.<\/li><li>In addition, Japan has also explored wind power and waste\/biomass energy mas well as experimental tidal and wave power plants in coastal regions.<\/li><li>Interestingly, unlike most industrial countries, Japan has two national grids instead a unified grid. One in the east and one in the west.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There were fewer leftover notes from the Toku Topic section than I expected. Nate is getting better about not overdoing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Join us next week for as Nate continues his series on Toho classics with a very different film (well, compared to what we normally cover): <em>Submersion of Japan <\/em>(aka <em>Japan Sinks<\/em>) from 1973. Nate\u2019s friends Joe and Joy Metter are returning\u2014and once again Nate won\u2019t get the chance to watch the MST3K episode of a Gamera movie.
