Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 74: Chris Cooke vs. ‘Power Rangers’ (2017)

This was my last broadcast (episode 74) before I was incarcerated. Actually, “detained” is a better word for it. The Legal Action Team worked hard to keep me from being sent to the mainland for trial. Me and my lady friend. (More on that later). Again, this episode was broadcast before the tragic death of Jason David Frank (see our charity livestream for more on that). Tommy Oliver isn’t in this film, so I don’t know how much would’ve changed. Regardless, I only had a handful of notes for this one.

  • Freestylin’ to Wu-Tang Clan with Chris in my mechs. Gotta love it. Nobody should hear it, though. We’d get canceled seven ways from Sunday.
  • The Island needs a donut store. I’m still hungry.
  • The last name of the screenwriter is Gatins. Listen to my Entertaining Info Dump for confirmation.
  • I still feel betrayed by George Lucas! The Phantom Menace isn’t what we wanted! But I should’ve known after he had Greedo shoot first. As for selling the franchise to Disney—you know what, I need to stop.
  • Speaking of ranting, I could rant just as well about the damn robots in this film! The “Archano-don” is ridiculous. So is the six-legged Triceratops. It’s no surprise the comic book sequel (link) tries to obscure those design elements.
  • Yes, Nate is a sadist. I’ve learned that all too well. Just ask his last girlfriend.
  • I think you meant “digital” not “optical” effects, Nate.
  • Okay, fine, I was daydreaming. You can’t fire me for that! You don’t have the “fire power”!

Nate’s research is once again derived heavily from his notes for the Power Trip episode on this film.

I only have a few more left before I’m finally caught up. Excuse me while I go finish.

Episode 74: Chris Cooke vs. ‘Power Rangers’ (2017)

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! “Ameri-kaiju” continues with a bit of an unusual entry; one that, serendipitously, Nate also covered around the same time on his other podcast, The Power Trip: the controversial Power Rangers (2017). While Nate has grown to appreciate this film quite a bit, he intentionally brought on Chris Cooke (co-host of One Cross Radio, Radio Arcade, and Powerbombs and Piledrivers) to discuss it because he does not. However, these two find more common ground than you’d think. That was surprisingly true in today’s Toku Topic, which is a discussion of representation in media. This serves as a great companion to the Power Trip episode.

Before today’s broadcast, Nate entered his office to find sitting in his chair none other than Mr. Gold. After a thinly veiled threat of “termination,” Nate divulges a secret about Jimmy to him. Afterward, the infamous “Not-Goldar” attacks Monster Island out of nowhere—but help arrives in the form of a newly powered-up Karone! But even Nate, Chris, and Jimmy get in on the monster-fighting action thanks to Mechani-Kong Mk. 2.

The prologue and epilogue, “With Friends Like You,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Michael Hamilton.

Guest Cast

  • Michael Hamilton as Mr. Gold
  • Celeste Mora as Karone

Additional music:

  • “Evil Rising” by David Fesliyan
  • “Pacific Rim,” “Power Rangers Lost Galaxy,” and “Go, Go, Power Rangers” by Niall Stenson
  • “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo

Episode 73 – ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie’ | Ft. The Cel Cast

(This episode was largely recorded and written before the tragic news of Jason David Frank’s death).

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In what you could call the perfect crossover between their podcasts, MIFV MAX members Drew and Jacob of The Cel Cast sponsor a discussion of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie. It has animated kaiju in it—they’re just bad CGI robots. But the real star of this film, like other pop culture blockbusters in 1995, was the villain Ivan Ooze (played by Paul Freeman), who steals every scene and eats all the scenery. If you’ve heard Nate discuss this on one of his other podcasts, The Power Trip, this will be an expansion on what he said there, particularly on the subject of the hero’s journey. Too bad for Nate and his co-hosts, their discussion is interrupted by a certain snarky bonehead.

The night before the broadcast, Nate journals about getting voicemails from Karone—an actual Power Ranger—and Raymund—who keeps claiming he was a Ranger. After the broadcast, Nate goes to a special “thank you for your service” meet-and-greet being held in honor of the recently retired Tommy Oliver. But an old foe of Tommy’s crashes the party.

This episode is dedicated in loving memory to Jason David Frank.

The prologue and epilogue, “Return of the Green Rangers,” was written by Nathan Marchand with Michael Hamilton. “Rito Calls” written by Nathan Marchand.

Guest Cast

  • Celeste Mora as Karone
  • Damon Noyes as Raymund Martin and Gary Steward
  • Joey Sourlis as Tommy Oliver
  • Shane Cochran as Ivan Ooze
  • Daniel DiManna as Ninjor

Additional music:

  • “Go Go Power Rangers” by The Power Rangers Orchestra
  • “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo
  • “Ivan Ooze” by Graeme Revell
  • “Go Green Ranger Go (Instrumental Redux)” by Ron Wasserman
  • “Susume! Gorenger (Opening Theme) Cover 秘密戦隊ゴレンジャー”by It Takes 2 to Toku

Episode 46: Daniel DiManna vs. ‘Gamera: Super Monster’

Hello…kaiju…lovers…. The only reason this episode is long as it is because Nate’s guest, Daniel DiManna (creator/author of the Godzilla Novelization Project) is the most talkative introvert ever of all time. But even if “Danny Boy” was Superman with a Beta Capsule, he couldn’t save this week’s Year of Gamera movie, the infamous Gamera: Super Monster. This 1980 cash-grab from a barely-alive Daiei Film is easily the Guardian of the Universe’s lowest point. On paper, Nate should love this movie because it has three of his favorite things—spaceships, superheroes, and kaiju—but he doesn’t. From public access channel special effects to a nonsensical plot with everything but the kitchen sink to the truckloads of stock footage—this must’ve been a plot by the Board of Directors to break Nate. Meanwhile, Danny keeps MIFV’s intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, quiet by getting him to bet his Pteranodon-bot that he can’t interrupt them during the broadcast. The Toku Topic, fittingly, is the rise and fall of Daiei Film, the studio that introduced the world to Akira Kurosawa and Gamera but dug itself into a financial hole it couldn’t escape. It’s a crazy story, to say the least.

Before the broadcast, Nate and Jimmy are visited by the Board’s executive assistant, Ms. Perkins. She tells Nate that she made arrangements for him to interview Spacewoman Kilara from Gamera: Super Monster on MIFV, much to his chagrin, and then fangirls over her. But the more Nate asks Ms. Perkins questions about her past, the stranger she acts.

Listen to Nate and Travis’s spinoff podcast, The Henshin Men Podcast, on Redcircle.

This episode’s epilogue, “Interviewing a Superheroine,” was written by Nathan Marchand.
