Jimmy’s Notes on Bonus Episode 13 – I Hate ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising,’ Change My Mind | Ft. Jack ‘GMan’ Hudgens

This bonus episode was an interesting one. Nate has been outspoken with his disdain for Uprising for a long time. He even trashed it on a GFEST panel before coming to the Island. Personally, I’m indifferent. I prefer the gloriously beautiful mecha from the first film (plus, Gipsy Danger is a better name than Gipsy Avenger), but I can’t deny the new technology in the film intrigued me. I’m amazed those kids passed piloting school, though. But I don’t have much room to talk because I couldn’t cut in Jaeger school. I guess surviving the infamous War in Space makes your brain drift incompatible.

Anyway, I jotted down a few notes from the “debate.” Here they are:

  • In my defense, Nate was certain in his wrongness about Amara and Newt. It was funny to watch him embarrass himself.
  • I did fight Jack once…I don’t want to talk about it.
  • The Bandai Mandates are a good band.
  • The Jaeger with the whip was Guardian Bravo.
  • The Mysterians perhaps makes Jimmy too happy…I’m not at liberty to say why.
  • Obsidian Fury’s original name, Black Mariah, is the name of a Marvel Comics character. Interesting, “Black Maria” is the name of a character in the popular manga One Piece.
  • I’m all for getting Nate stoned. It’d be our highest-rated and most downloaded episode ever of all time.

Nate didn’t have a bunch of research for this episode since he wanted Jack to carry most of it, but here’s what he had.

All right, I have a lunch date with my cellmate in the detention center. More blogs to come!

Bonus Episode 13 – I Hate ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising,’ Change My Mind | Ft. Jack ‘GMan’ Hudgens

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In a fun little “sequel” to MIFV’s glorious Pacific Rim episode, Nate is joined by the co-host of The Drift Space podcast, Jack “GMan” Hudgens, to discuss a sequel Nate has hated since seeing it in a theater: Pacific Rim: Uprising. Nate didn’t want to have an episode on this film, but when he saw an opportunity for a Fifth Wednesday Bonus Episode, he decided to bring Jack, a stalwart defender of the film, to convince him it has merit. And he makes a valiant effort, going so far as to compare it to Jun Fukuda’s Godzilla films! Does Jack succeed at changing Nate’s mind? Listen to find out!

Episode 70: The Drifters vs. ‘Pacific Rim’

Hello, kaiju lovers! Nate has been waiting for this Ameri-kaiju episode for a long time—he gets to discuss one of his favorite films: Pacific Rim! He’s joined by the three co-hosts of The Drift Space podcast—returning guests Jack “GMan” Hudgens and J.R. Viller, plus Jack’s sister, Rebecca—to gush about how much they love it. Guillermo del Toro’s masterful tribute to both tokusatsu and anime is a movie that is unabashedly itself with its archetypal but strong characters, incredible worldbuilding, and mind-blowing special effects. But beneath the beyond-cool chassis beats the heart of a grossly underestimated story of surprising depth. If you don’t already love Pacific Rim, Nate and the Drifters will change your mind!

Beforehand, Nate discovers data files for an abandoned ad campaign for an unknown kaiju named “Chimera.” After the broadcast, as you undoubtedly heard, a mysterious kaiju attacked the Island but was killed by the Drifters in their Jaeger, Bouncing Betty. Nate’s live broadcast of that battle is included here.

The prologue and epilogue, “Chimera,” was written by Nathan Marchand.

Additional music:

  • “Cradle of the Chozo” by prophetic music
  • “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson
  • “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo
