Jimmy’s Notes on ‘Episode 63: King Kong vs. Godzilla | Godzilla Redux | Ft. AlyssaGojiGeek’

Now I’m only ten episodes or so behind! Ha!

I wondered if having Alyssa Charpentier on episode 63 was a good idea, but Nate insisted he had to have her on. I wasn’t going to argue with having a Navy woman on the show (I worked extensively with naval aviators while in the Air Force back in the day), which Nate took as filtration. Given that she’s also a writer and a nerd, I told him I could say the same about him. But we behaved ourselves, and despite Goji-kun and Bro Kong mucking around with the equipment during that broadcast, the episode turned out well. I only took a few notes.

  • I can handle Alyssa…although, she is a short girl. You have to watch out for those.
  • Oh, man. The beeps. So. Many! Freakin’ mascot gremlins!
  • I prefer Nick Adams as my spirit animal. This is a well-established fact on the show.
  • Noh theater does not use puppets; it uses dance and minimal props. Bunraku uses puppets.
  • It wasn’t the satellite from Battle in Outer Space but the Mysterian Space Station that was passed off as the U.N. satellite in the U.S. version. It’s an easy mistake to make, Nate, because the former is a pseudo-sequel to the latter.
  • Alyssa is a “fangirl,” Nate! Get the terminology right! She may be a tomboy, but she’s still a woman!
  • Episode 13 was The Three Treasures, Nate.
  • I’m not wounded by her not seeing 20 Million Miles to Earth. Ego? Bah! Even if I had one, it wouldn’t compare to Michael Hamilton’s! 😛

After a full day of celebrating the King of the Monsters’ 68th birthday, Nathan is joined by his Power Trip co-host, Michael Hamilton, in an out-of-character livestream. They discuss Fathom Events’ screening of Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, the two Gigan short films that were posted on YouTube (for five minutes), and the myriad of Godzilla-related news that broke Nov. 3, 2022. They spend most of that time speculating about the new Godzilla film directed by the acclaimed Takashi Yamazaki that was officially announced. What do they expect, and what would they like to see, as fans?

Episode 71: ‘Invasion of Astro-Monster’ | Ft. The Dapper Man | Godzilla Redux

Hello, kaiju lovers! Godzilla Redux is in full gear with one of Big G’s most quintessential films—and Jimmy From NASA’s personal favorite, because reasons—Invasion of Astro-Monster (aka Monster Zero and Godzilla vs. Monster Zero). For this occasion, Nate is joined the Dapper Man himself, Kevin Joshua Burnham, who is a YouTuber, the co-host of The Bottom Shelf podcast, and a longtime fan of MIFV. Everyone’s favorite angry Irishman dives deep into this film with Nate, discussing its making, its cast, and how it showcases the Japanese’s very different sensibilities when it comes to alien invasion stories. Spoiler warning: the Xiliens aren’t anti-American symbols.

Before the broadcast, Jimmy tells Nate he has something he needs to show in his garage after the show. Afterward, Jimmy shows him the “museum piece” Cameron Winter bribed gifted him with: a Xilien saucer. But the big secret is what—or rather, who—is inside.

Episode 69: ‘Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster’ | Ft. Luke and Jason Jaconetti

Published August 17, 2022

Hello, kaiju lovers! Today them Jaconetti boys, Luke and Jason, join Nate for the latest entry in “Godzilla Redux”: Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. This was Toho’s third kaiju film in the momentous year of 1964 and their second Godzilla film that year. As Luke puts it, it’s The Avengers (2012) of Toho kaiju, where several monsters who debuted in solo films come together to face a common alien enemy. It’s a momentous turning point for the franchise: Godzilla and Rodan have their “face turns,” and it’s the first appearance of Godzilla’s archnemesis, the three-headed golden space dragon himself, King Ghidorah. Get ready for a lively, nostalgic discussion riddled with pro-wrestling references!

Before the broadcast, Nate is met by Jessica at his new mega-office. During their argument (what’d you expect?), Gary comes in along with a beautiful mystery woman, whom Jessica immediately hates. Later, Nate returns to his office where he argues with Jessica again, only for Gary to come begging for help—just as the mystery woman reveals herself to be a Bug Lady from the Church of Mothrianity!

Episode 65: ‘Mothra vs. Godzilla’ | Godzilla Redux | Ft. Daniel DiManna

Hello, kaiju lovers! Today’s episode is a momentous one. Nate discusses the all-time classic Mothra vs. Godzilla with Daniel DiManna of the Godzilla Novelization Project. Now Nate has come full circle because this was the first film whose episode he recorded first in his previous podcast life. But this episode is better! How could it not be with the living kaiju encyclopedia as a guest? Nate and Danny discuss everything: the Godzilla suit, the Mothra puppet, the script, the characters, and of course, the late great Akira Takarada. This G-film doesn’t do anything new, but what it does, it does to near-perfection. No wonder it’s considered one of the best of the franchise!

Afterward, Nate and Danny are joined by Nate’s pseudo-sister, Jessica, to livestream the sendoff of Mothra’s newly-laid egg back to Infant Island. Unfortunately, the Church of Mothrianity strikes again! The web-splitting Silkworm attacks, and even Jessica’s magical girl persona, Crystal Lady, can’t stop her—until she gets help from a new companion.

The epilogue, “The Coming of Mimo! Crystal Lady vs. Silkworm!” was written by Nathan Marchand.
