Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 85 – Godzilla: The Series | ‘Monster Wars’ | Ft. The Cel Cast | Godzilla Redux

In case anyone is wondering: Kaguya and I are fine. I know there are rumors going around that we broke up or were on the rocks. We’ve talked things over. It took a while to help her understand some things about how human “cultural frameworks,” as she calls them, work, but she seems to get it now…sorta. Am I still in the doghouse? Yeah. I’m giving her a bit of space. But I have to say, to paraphrase Jack Driscoll, “I think I…” Ahem! Anyway, let’s get into my notes on Episode 85 (Godzilla: The Series – “Monster Wars”), which featured the return of the “cartoon guys,” Drew Dodgen and Jacob Heron, from The Cel Cast.

  • The air conditioning will get fixed…eventually. This walking cobbled-together junk pile has far more pressing issues to fix…like the CD player.
  • As cute as D33-D117 (Deedlit?) is for an AI…Kaguya would kill me! She almost did after we recaptured Utam Goliathon!
  • MIFV’s previous Godzilla: The Series coverage was Episode 45 (“New Family” and “Deadloch”) and Bonus Episode 11 (“The Cameron Winter Trilogy”).
  • I think Drew was referring to Winter’s episodes of the show being before “Monster Wars.” He’s correct…about one. Winter’s first episode was episode five while “Monster Wars” was episodes 15-17.
  • The Martians didn’t know Earth’s bacteria was fatal to them…or was it a bio-weapon? That’s what Alan Moore would want you to believe. I know how much you love that, Nate. 😛
  • These aliens never win beauty pageants and hate being compared to the Harkonnens. Trust me, I’ve run into a few of them.
  • I asked the scientists if Zilla Jr. purrs. They looked at me like I was a weirdo. I am, but still, that was rude.
  • Wingnut?! #DeepCut
  • “Draczilla” That’s a terrifying concept. I’ll tell the Board to ban anyone from Transylvania from visiting the Island.
  • I fought Frussians once. I don’t want to talk about it.
  • Lies! You’ve kink-shamed me!
  • “Play it again, Sam,” is a misquoted line, as Nate explained. While it’s associated with Humphrey Bogart, something like it, “Play it, Sam,” was actually said by Ingrid Bergman.
  • Inspirational temporal displacement? That’s an oxymoron if I ever heard one. And yet another reason I hate time travel.
  • Paris has been attacked by kaiju, but only in Godzilla stories. Specifically, Destroy All Monsters, this three-parter, Godzilla: Final Wars, Godzilla Unleashed: Final Smash, and Godzilla: Rulers of Earth. (Fun fact: there’s a Kaiju No. 8 mural in Paris).
  • Admittedly, I didn’t have much time to search for kaiju attacks on Washington, D.C. (and my internet searches kept bringing up very different sorts of attacks), but much to Nate’s chagrin, the one I did find is an Asylum movie:
  • I might have something to do with the shield D33-D117 found around D.C.…I don’t want to talk about it.
  • You’d be surprised how many trailer park aliens there are in the galaxy. Poverty is universal.
  • We don’t talk about mushrooms on MIFV. For very good reasons.
  • Popcorn ball, Nate, not cornball.
  • Occam’s razor > technobabble. So, I’m with Monique in this case.
  • It’s always too soon for Firefly.
  • I think I met Queen Bleep once. I don’t want to talk about it.
  • “Nilla”? As funny as that is, Dr. Tatopoulos won’t approve that name.
  • The years for crab movies are correct, Nate.
  • It’s not often I’m left speechless about crabs. (Although, I’m thinking of a different type of crabs…).

We’re going to be busy in March at MIFV. We have another impromptu episode (hopefully), which will go over the just-released The Whale God, a semi-obscure Daiei film, with Daniel DiManna and Elijah Thomas. Then we get back to the World Tour with our first South Korean film, Yongary, Monster from the Deep (1967) with special guest Neil Riebe. We punctuate the month with season four’s first Patreon-sponsored episode courtesy of executive producer Damon Noyes, which will be our first double feature: Attack of the Crab Monsters and Island Claws. From our first Roger Corman flick to an almost-unknown pseudo-remake.

Until next time, remember…we shall overcome!

Episode 85 – Godzilla: The Series – ‘Monster Wars’ | Ft. The Cel Cast | Godzilla Redux

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! You might be wondering, “Aren’t you supposed to cover Destroy All Monsters for Godzilla Redux, Nate?” Yes…but I’m not. For reasons. Anyway, we have the next-best thing: the three-part epic from Godzilla: The Series—“Monster Wars”! And who else could be the guests for animated kaiju shenanigans other than Drew and Jacob from The Cel Cast. They and Nate go through each episode beat-for-beat and analyze everything from the writing to the voice acting to the animation. You’ll also hear some great factoids Nate researched about these, the three best episodes of the show. Not to mention he delves into the unmade sequel to Godzilla (1998) that sounds eerily similar to this show!

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 45 | ‘Godzilla: The Series’ – ‘New Family’ and ‘DeadLoch’ (feat. Eli Harris)

I can neither confirm nor deny that I spent a sizable portion of my latest paycheck on aloe vera cream after getting burned in episode 45 by Eli Harris. He’s lucky he’s a paying Patron, or I would’ve tongue-lashed him right back. (Nate’s editorial: Whatever helps you sleep at night, Jimmy).

Now for what you actually came here to read: my notes on the episode. In between enduring some zingers, I managed to take a few. They were mostly responses to what Nate and Eli said as opposed to corrections. Kudos there, guys. But you won’t always be able to escape that. So, here’s what I jotted down:

  • That’s your best recommendation for a drink, Marchand? These are better: The Happy Moment, the Megalon Bomb, and the Plasma Spark. Although, my personal favorite is the Nick Adams Apple Cider.
  • Digimon is clearly superior to Pokémon—yes, because technology. I might even still have one (or three) of those virtual pet toys in my quarters. (Don’t judge me!)
  • I want an ejection button and seat for the guests’ chairs. I might even install one in the host chair, Marchand. I know George 3 has suggested I do that. After the episode 45 broadcast, it got more tempting. 😛
  • Don’t make me pull that EES lever, Marchand! I’ll shoot you into space myself! 😛
  • Or the show inspired the unmade Godzilla (1998) sequel? I’m sure they were in development relatively close together. This video from the Kaiju Masterclass online convention sheds some great light on it. It’s an interview with screenwriter Tab Murphy.
  • I could take Monique. Can she claim to have survived the (in)famous War in Space? I don’t think so! Next time I see her at the gym, I’ll challenge her to a sparring match. I’ll let you know how it goes. (Nate’s editorial: Badly).
  • I offered to have the H.E.A.T.-Seeker treated for rust, but Tatapoulos won’t do it. He says the boat would lose its charm if it was treated. Maybe this is my inner “car guy” talking here, but I have to disagree. Especially since you don’t want rust weakening your hull when you’re being attacked by a kaiju.
  • Randy Hernandez isn’t ready for my quips. You know firsthand, Nate.
  • Nate, that was the Titan Truth Podcast logo! How did you miss that?!

As required by my contact, here are Nate’s leftover notes from the episode:

“New Family, Part 1”

  • The Twin Towers are in the theme and some establishing shots. Awkward? (No. –Jimmy)
  • Pays very close attention continuity despite minor changes. Jamaica being Zilla’s first stop.
  • Nick’s attitude shifts even in this episode: from killing Zilla Jr. to studying it. More Toho-esque.
  • Zilla Jr. holds Nick like Kong does Anne. Almost eats him. Not because of fish smell? Acts like a dog—scratches door and walks in circle before lying down.
  • Animal didn’t know Nick was Audrey’s boyfriend?! (Can you blame him for forgetting? Remember the movie, man! –Jimmy)

 “New Family, Part 2”

  • There are some scaling issues. Sometimes Zilla Jr. is HUGE. (They went for drama and not realism, obviously. –Jimmy)
  • Zilla Jr. throws rocks like Showa Godzilla. He’s also clever and strategic. Thankfully, Zilla Jr. breathes atomic fire and is more durable. Survives landslide.
  • Establishes tension between HEAT and military.

“Deadloch”

  • Hugh Trevor. Pisces.
  • Funny how Monique yells, “Randy!” and Elsie yells, “Nick!” when they dive in to save them. (Two words: sexual tension. –Jimmy)

Notes on the Series

  • Godzilla is animalistic but smart enough to solve problems. He’s loyal to HEAT, but he has his own agency.
  • They had access to other Toho monsters outside of the “big three,” but they kept coming up with ideas for cool new monsters, so there was no room for them.

Nate shared all his Loch Ness Monster research. Hot damn!

Sadly, I don’t know if Nate will survive the next episode, even with guest Daniel DiManna in the guest chair. He calls it “the nadir of the Year of Gamera.” That would be Gamera Super Monster. Even with a pseudo-Star Destroyer and hot women in spandex, it’s a hard sell for me. Assuming Nate survives, we get back to Godzilla Redux with 1956’s Godzilla, King of the Monsters!, which will feature “the littlest gatekeeper,” Elijah Thomas of the Kaiju Conversation podcast. That’ll be interesting.

See you next week!

Episode 45, ‘Godzilla: The Series’ – ‘New Family’ & ‘DeadLoch’ (feat. Eli Harris)

Hello, kaiju lovers! Welcome to MIFV’s first Patreon-sponsored episode and TV talk! MIFV MAX member Eli Harris visits Monster Island to discuss three episodes of the criminally underappreciated Godzilla: The Series, the vastly superior Saturday morning cartoon sequel to Godzilla (1998). Their discussion includes the show’s the two-part premiere, “New Family,” which picks up where the movie left off, and Eli’s favorite episode, “DeadLoch” (ba-dum-tssh), where Zilla Jr. meets the Loch Ness Monster. You’ll hear some great facts about Nessie, too. All the while, Eli stings MIFV’s intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, with the best zingers this side of “the Pond.” Afterward, Nate visits the office of the Monster Island Legal Action Team to meet with Gary and see what the paralegal has uncovered about the Board of Directors—after Gary goes dumpster diving.

Check out Eli’s podcast, Tokusatsu Beyond.

Guest Stars

  • Damon Noyes as both Raymund Martin and Gary

This episode’s epilogue, “Truth in the Trash,” was written by Nathan Marchand (with Damon Noyes).

FROM THE DESK OF WILLIAM H. GEORGE III – ‘Zilla Jr. Threat Level Update / New Head of Security

DATE: 07-31-2020

TO: ALL EMPLOYEES

FROM: THE MONSTER ISLAND BOARD OF DIRECTORS

SUBJECT: ‘ZILLA JR. THREAT LEVEL UPDATE / NEW HEAD OF SECURITY

Last week the Monster Island Board of Directors sent out an email stating that ‘Zilla Jr’s threat level was still under assessment. As of 8 am today the team has come back with its final evaluation on the creature.

File image of ‘Zilla Junior.

The team has determined that ‘Zilla’s threat level stands at 8.5/10. A full readout of this assessment can be accessed through the employee portal. If you possess the proper clearances, you will be able to read that report, in full, as of 10 am tomorrow. We still strongly encourage any employee traveling to the NE quadrant of the island to use extreme caution. ‘Zilla will be released from his paddock later this week after some final blood testing and security tagging. An official public statement about the creature’s release will be made after Miss Perkins has a chance to review it.

Captain Douglas Gordon

Also, given that security on the island has been of great concern to all of us, The Monster Island Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Capt. Douglas Gordon will be joining the team as our NEW Head of Security. His role goes into effect immediately. We are currently in the process of gathering all necessary resources he and his team may need to do their job effectively and efficiently.

The Board has also instructed Capt. Gordon to do a full security assessment of any and all facilities here on the island. This includes but is not limited to:

  • ANY AND ALL guest services areas
  • Kaiju paddocks
  • The Monster Island Resort
  • ANY AND ALL garage and storage areas on the island
  • The recording studio and radio station
  • ANY AND ALL research facilities

Be advised, that inspections will be carried out at random. When Capt. Gordon and his team do come to your facility please treat them with respect and answer any and all questions clearly and concisely. This will allow the Captain and his team to work as efficiently as Earthly possible.

Once again, thank you all for helping us keep Monster Island one of the best places to work and thrive on Earth. It’s because of team members like you we can see a better way forward.

Sincerely,
The Monsters Island Board of Directors
