Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 81: ‘Godzilla Minus One’ vs. Jack ‘GMan’ Hudgens

Nate tossed out an impromptu episode on Godzilla Minus One while the film is still popular, so now it’s time the Jimmy From NASA wrote a blog on it! It’s always fun having Mr. Hudgens on. I remind him daily that, while he kinda looks like Glen, I knew Glen. Jack’s Twit-X avatar is Nick Adams, but Nick Adams is my spirit animal. In other words, accept no substitutions! Anyway, let’s get into my notes on this episode.

  • It’s always a red letter day when Nate admits he’s wrong. Now he needs to admit I’m right. (I’m always right…most of the time).
  • C.S. Lewis originally wrote about “chronological snobbery” in Surprised by Joy, where he wrote, “Barfield never made me an Anthroposophist, but his counterattacks destroyed forever two elements in my own thought. In the first place he made short work of what I have called my ‘chronological snobbery,’ the uncritical acceptance of the intellectual climate common to our own age and the assumption that whatever has gone out of date is on that account discredited. You must find why it went out of date. Was it ever refuted (and if so by whom, where, and how conclusively) or did it merely die away as fashions do? If the latter, this tells us nothing about its truth or falsehood. From seeing this, one passes to the realization that our own age is also ‘a period,’ and certainly has, like all periods, its own characteristic illusions. They are likeliest to lurk in those widespread assumptions which are so ingrained in the age that no one dares to attack or feels it necessary to defend them.”
  • Nate wishes he could see Minus One five times in a week. The Board is keeping him busy before his contract has to be renewed.
  • How many Godzilla continuities are there?
    • Showa
    • Heisei
    • Godzilla 1998
    • Godzilla 2000
    • Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
    • GMK
    • The Kiryu Saga
    • Final Wars
    • MonsterVerse
    • Shin Godzilla
    • Godzilla Minus One
    • …and various cartoons, comics, and other media!
  • It was a 13mm gun, Nate, not a 15mm gun. (But I wrote the EID. Oops…).
  • I can neither confirm nor deny I was the one who recorded that GMK bootleg Jack bought. I was desperate for money at the time.
  • I want Yamazaki to direct Always Sunny in Philadelphia now. It might make it better. 😛
  • The full title is Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle.
  • “Singular pointing”™.
  • Well, double Bullzord on you, Marchand!
  • I have opinions about bad pilots…but I did crash my fighter into a mountain, so….
  • I need issue 3 of Batman Meets Godzilla STAT, too!
  • Neither of these bozos know how to pronounce names.
    • “jee-ah” not “jaye-ah”
    • “gin-zah” not “jin-zaa”
    • “ki-tah-muhr-ah” not “ki-tah-meer-ah”
    • It’s “Kikuchi” not “Kiguchi,” Nate. (Although, he did correct himself later).
  • This was cut, but I realized I need to install mics in the green room. Both Reb and “ET” piped in a little, but they couldn’t be heard. We have an extra microphone that almost never gets used. I can install it in the green room.
  • Nate’s jealous of my math skills. No wonder he was an English major.
  • Speaking as an accidental kamikaze, that was a terrible joke, Nate.
  • I hear Captain Gordon thought Jack was an imposter on the air. But Gordon was drinking, and he often thinks everyone is impersonating him while inebriated.
  • Jessica might use her magic powers to turn Nate into a “Baka bomb.” She confirmed this to me personally.
  • I confirmed the HMAS Australia was attacked five different times by kamikazes.
  • The American ship attacked by 18 kamikazes whose name Nate couldn’t remember was the USS Laffey (DD-724). It was the worst kamikaze attack of the war.
  • Jack said it was a fire extinguisher, not a hose.
  • “The peanut gallery”? As in “ET”? I was checking the broadcast time, too. We went longer than I expected. However, “ET” equates quantity with quality, which isn’t always the case. We beat him there.
  • Laundry bills aren’t covered by our guest services. Although, Gary got around that.
  • Jack going Super Saiyan was the loudest I’ve ever heard anyone on this show—and I work with Nate Marchand!

Nate had a lot of notes for this episode, but he was disallowed by “ET” from taking notes on his phone during the film. Nate has decided he’s taking a pad of paper with him from now on. Although, he admits he wouldn’t have been able to take notes while being thrashed by the 4DX seats. Regardless, here are his notes:

Enjoy these while you can. Starting with the next episode, his leftover notes will be MIFV MAX exclusives on Patreon.

As Nate mentioned, season four, “The Monster Island World Tour,” begins in 2024, starting with Super Infra-Man (a perennial favorite of MST3K creator, Joel Hodgson), which will feature Godzilla Novelization Project creator Daniel DiManna. Then “Godzilla Redux” returns with Son of Godzilla, featuring Neil Riebe as a guest.

And so, season three finally comes to an end. We a lot to do…assuming our contracts are renewed. Thankfully, as Nate loves to say, we know a really good lawyer.

Episode 81: ‘Godzilla Minus One’ vs. Jack ‘GMan’ Hudgens

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! There was no way Nate could let Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One—only the most successful live action Japanese film ever released in America—go unanalyzed! So, for this special coda to MIFV season three, he’s joined by everyone’s favorite a-hole/”gatekeeper,” Jack “GMan” Hudgens, to discuss what might be worthy of the “Mount Rushmore of Kaiju Films.” They unpack everything from its rich themes, incredible characters, marvelous special effects, and more! Jimmy’s Notes on Bonus Episode 13 – I Hate ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising,’ Change My Mind | Ft. Jack ‘GMan’ Hudgens

This bonus episode was an interesting one. Nate has been outspoken with his disdain for Uprising for a long time. He even trashed it on a GFEST panel before coming to the Island. Personally, I’m indifferent. I prefer the gloriously beautiful mecha from the first film (plus, Gipsy Danger is a better name than Gipsy Avenger), but I can’t deny the new technology in the film intrigued me. I’m amazed those kids passed piloting school, though. But I don’t have much room to talk because I couldn’t cut in Jaeger school. I guess surviving the infamous War in Space makes your brain drift incompatible.

Anyway, I jotted down a few notes from the “debate.” Here they are:

  • In my defense, Nate was certain in his wrongness about Amara and Newt. It was funny to watch him embarrass himself.
  • I did fight Jack once…I don’t want to talk about it.
  • The Bandai Mandates are a good band.
  • The Jaeger with the whip was Guardian Bravo.
  • The Mysterians perhaps makes Jimmy too happy…I’m not at liberty to say why.
  • Obsidian Fury’s original name, Black Mariah, is the name of a Marvel Comics character. Interesting, “Black Maria” is the name of a character in the popular manga One Piece.
  • I’m all for getting Nate stoned. It’d be our highest-rated and most downloaded episode ever of all time.

Nate didn’t have a bunch of research for this episode since he wanted Jack to carry most of it, but here’s what he had.

All right, I have a lunch date with my cellmate in the detention center. More blogs to come!

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 70: The Drifters vs. ‘Pacific Rim’

We had yet another semi-chaotic episode. That’s what happens when you have multiple guests on the show for as huge a film as Pacific Rim (episode 70). I was surprisingly silent because I was taking notes and enjoying the conversation. What can I say? The Drifters are some of my favorite guests we’ve featured. So, here are my notes:

  • My opinions on Nate’s promotion…are not safe for public consumption.
  • Reb is a queen who slays. I don’t normally like using that phrase, but for her, I’ll make an exception.
  • I WILL rant about that Bouncing Betty! Reb’s design is excellent. It’s rare that such a large number of influences could be combined into one machine without looking like an ugly mess. The Pan-Pacific Defense Corps should definitely hire her for future designs to combat the Kaiju menace. While I will say Vulcan cannons are a classic and a standard mecha armament, additional weapons would improve the design. Overall, it’s not as beautiful as Gipsy Danger (because, yes, I’d marry that robot, if it was a woman—although, probably not now), but it’s a piece of work in the best possible way.
  • I was remarkably silent for reasons I’ve already outlined above.
  • You caught it, Nate, because I trained you well. And no, J.R., you will hear more from me!
  • #CancelTheApocalypse
  • I knew how to say it…whatever it was. It’d been too long since that broadcast.
  • Those “Yes, quites” did concern me.
  • I want what J.R. has…whatever that is.
  • It’s not a rhesus monkey but a rhesus macaque, which has six to nine subspecies native to South, Central, and Southeast Asia. You can read more about them on Wikipedia. Here’s a link.
  • At least I don’t read comics all day at work like J.R.! I prefer technical manuals.
  • I had some Clonaid once. I don’t want to talk about it. It’d make Nate’s “transporter accident” look like a traffic ticket.
  • The answer to which U.S. states have anti-cloning laws is a bit more multifaceted than I expected. Let me explain:
    • Federal law doesn’t prohibit human cloning. (Don’t tell Cameron Winter).
    • Eight states prohibit cloning for any reason: Arizona, Arkansas, Nate’s home state of Indiana, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Virginia.
    • Four states prohibit state funding of human cloning for any reason: Arizona, Indiana, Michigan, Louisiana.
    • Ten states have “clone and kill” laws, which prevent clones embryo implantation for childbirth but allow these embryos to be destroyed (California, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, Rhode Island).
    • Two states include “human cloning” as a practice health professionals can’t be force to participate in because of healthcare rights of conscience laws (Idaho and Louisiana).
  • Watch your mouth, J.R.! I take slander about my SCIENCE very seriously! I do not engage in cloning experiments…as far as you know….

Here’s Nate’s complete research document for your reading and studying pleasure:

There’s more blogs where this came from! (Namely, Monster Island’s detention center).

BONUS – Remembering Jason David Frank: A Charity Livestream (audio version)

On November 28, 2022, a multitude of podcasters and YouTubers—Nathan Marchand, Michael Hamilton, Travis Alexander, Jack “GMan” Hudgens (The Drift Space), J.R. Villers (The Drift Space), Rebecca Hudgens (The Drift Space), Kaiju Kim, Chris Cooke, and Jimmy from Zeo 2 Hero—came together to celebrate the life and work of Jason David Frank. From acting to martial arts to teaching to motivational speaking, he did it all. But he’ll always be remembered as Tommy Oliver, the most popular Power Ranger. He was the face of the brand for years and a hero to his fans. Because he took his own life, your hosts spent this long livestream raising money for To Write Love On Her Arms, “a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and invest directly into treatment and recovery.” Their goal is to raise $800, and you can still contribute at the link below.

Bonus Episode 13 – I Hate ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising,’ Change My Mind | Ft. Jack ‘GMan’ Hudgens

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In a fun little “sequel” to MIFV’s glorious Pacific Rim episode, Nate is joined by the co-host of The Drift Space podcast, Jack “GMan” Hudgens, to discuss a sequel Nate has hated since seeing it in a theater: Pacific Rim: Uprising. Nate didn’t want to have an episode on this film, but when he saw an opportunity for a Fifth Wednesday Bonus Episode, he decided to bring Jack, a stalwart defender of the film, to convince him it has merit. And he makes a valiant effort, going so far as to compare it to Jun Fukuda’s Godzilla films! Does Jack succeed at changing Nate’s mind? Listen to find out!

Episode 70: The Drifters vs. ‘Pacific Rim’

Hello, kaiju lovers! Nate has been waiting for this Ameri-kaiju episode for a long time—he gets to discuss one of his favorite films: Pacific Rim! He’s joined by the three co-hosts of The Drift Space podcast—returning guests Jack “GMan” Hudgens and J.R. Viller, plus Jack’s sister, Rebecca—to gush about how much they love it. Guillermo del Toro’s masterful tribute to both tokusatsu and anime is a movie that is unabashedly itself with its archetypal but strong characters, incredible worldbuilding, and mind-blowing special effects. But beneath the beyond-cool chassis beats the heart of a grossly underestimated story of surprising depth. If you don’t already love Pacific Rim, Nate and the Drifters will change your mind!

Beforehand, Nate discovers data files for an abandoned ad campaign for an unknown kaiju named “Chimera.” After the broadcast, as you undoubtedly heard, a mysterious kaiju attacked the Island but was killed by the Drifters in their Jaeger, Bouncing Betty. Nate’s live broadcast of that battle is included here.

The prologue and epilogue, “Chimera,” was written by Nathan Marchand.

Additional music:

  • “Cradle of the Chozo” by prophetic music
  • “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson
  • “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo
  • “Feel Sound – Cinematic Adventure” | Music promoted by MAGIC SOUND®

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 39: The Drifters vs. ‘Gamera vs. Viras’

I wrote down the most notes I’ve had in a long time for episode 39, so buckle up, space cadets, you’re about to get schooled by Jimmy!

  • Nate, the “uncut 90-minute version” was how the first Japanese laserdisc was marketed, not when it was on U.S. TV. Did you forget that from my Entertaining Info Dump? Apparently.
  • There was debate over whether the actress in the film had the same hair color as my mother, but it’s a moot point now because she … died in New York. Yeah, the woman J.R. was probably the actress who played her in this film. Or someone who looked like her. Or he’s crazy.
  • Goji-kun and Bro Kong caused a lot of issues with the broadcast that were edited out of the podcast version. It was a mess. Ultra-Mite was sleeping on the job or something.
  • In Nate’s defense, I’ve gone back and forth on how to say Viras’s name, and I grew up in Japan. I guess I’m still a dirty, dirty American. I also fought the space squid. Well, I helped Gamera fight him. It’s more than most of my fellow Gamera kids did.
  • It was cut to a third, Jack, not by a third.
  • So, while Carl Craig has the spray-painted Nerf gun with a beer can on it, I have a real Virasian blaster rifle. It’s not my favorite gun, but it did burn through my target in my private little shooting range here on the Island.
  • Yes, I’m not happy about not getting invited to the Gamera Gala. And Masao is upset I wasn’t, too. But given what happened to Nate, maybe it was for the best.
  • Yeah, and here’s my Gamera badge:
  • “Relegate,” not, “regulate,” Jack.
  • Yeah, Masao won’t shut up about giving Gamera the “Friend to All Children” title. It drives our fellow Gamera kids crazy. And given that Kenny is already psychotic, that’s saying something!
  • I should also note that my father doesn’t look like the actor in this movie, either. He was a proud member of the U.S. Air Force who was stationed in Japan for a while. It was partly because of him that I enlisted.
  • Carl Craig’s father was American and his mother Japanese.
  • I have a judo merit badge and a blackbelt. Don’t cross me, J.R.! (They don’t work well when I’m drunk, though ….)
  • Masao and I didn’t get our Golden Pheasant awards for a month because we got grounded for our shenanigans. You’d think helping to save the world would nullify that, but no, my parents didn’t want me sub-jacking later in life.
  • Soichi Noguchi and I go way back. He helped me test fly the Gohten once.
  • There was a lot of crack in that MIBOD memo.
  • Death trumps cancer. And I will find out what “J.R.” stands for! Maybe it’s just “Junior.”
  • I’m looking forward to Sayonara Jupiter.
  • Marveller? I’ve yet to examine that machine. Japanese Spider-Man needs to let me keep it in my garage for a day next time.

Now for Nate’s leftover notes:

The Movie

  • Gamera can breathe fire in the vacuum of space. Sure. (Even physics bow to the new MIBOD-appointed “king of the monsters.” –Jimmy)
  • Of course the kids can operate a sub better than the adults. This is a Gamera movie! (No, it’s because Masao and I were brilliant children. –Jimmy)
  • On Twitter, Gamera offered to race Jimmy and Masao in a sub again. (And one of these days, we’ll take him up on that offer. –Jimmy)
  • “Super Catch ray.” Do they use that on Pokemon, too?
  • Gamera can somehow hear the kids in the sub and understand them. Because. (This still baffles the scientists. –Jimmy)
  • Videotron. Isn’t that a sequel to Videodrome?
  • “Making up stories”? Did you forget Gamera is real? (Just wait until the next movie ….)
  • That flying Gamera prop looks goofy. It’s the eyes.
  • Transformer mass shifting. The mind control device goes from the size of a grapefruit to the size of a VW Beetle. (I want some of this tech. It’d make it easier to hide more vehicles in my garage. –Jimmy)
  • Their computer’s “Processing” screen is a kaleidoscope.
  • Well, that guy was disarmed.
  • Getting pinned to the wall like that doesn’t look comfortable. How do they stay up when they’re off the floor and not pinned to the wall? It’s terrible because they can slip their hands out easily. And they escape easily. (Or I’d been reading a lot of books on Houdini. –Jimmy)
  • This stock footage is passed off as a different dam (Okumusashi Dam). Sadly, it still has the B&W problem.
  • Because an alien spaceship somehow works the same as an earth submarine?
  • I see Jimmy was a tech genius even back then. He figured out the Virases ship in no time. (Did you forget it’s me you’re talking about? –Jimmy)
  • Why can’t the aliens control Gamera anymore? (Because. –Jimmy)
  • Virases can combine into a giant. Because.
  • I do like how big Viras weaponizes what’s left of the ship.
  • Gamera says, “Go home and get stoned!”
  • Seriously, Gamera? Defeated by getting flipped on your back?

Intro to the film by Ragone

  • Carl Craig was born in South Carolina to Japanese mother and American military man. He spoke fluent Japanese. He served in the military himself and for U.S. security after 9-11.
  • Viras looks like a squid, but in the original script, he was called “Geso,” the Japanese word for cuttlefish. His name was chosen in a name contest held by Shonen Jump and Bokura, which had prizes, but Yuasa said these were staged.

The Commentary by Carl Craig and Jim Cirronella

  • Carl Craig got the role because his aunt lived next door to one of the producers. They wanted an American kid who spoke Japanese, and he was blonde-haired and blue-eyed and could do that. Yuasa wanted it to have an international flair.
  • It was filmed in 2.5 months. Craig’s days started at 4am. He was picked up from a base and had a tutor for school over the two-hour drive.
  • There are some scenes where Craig has a bandage on his finger because he cut his finger throwing a bottle and went to the ER. He also lost his U.S. handkerchief and was given a Japanese one.
  • This was the first Gamera movie to have stock footage. About 20 minutes. Craig hadn’t seen this footage until he and his fifth-grade class went to see it at the premiere.

LeMay

  • Masakazu Nagata, the president of Daiei, was involved with the Boy Scouts, which is why they were involved.
  • One of the aliens is Riki Hashimoto, who played Daimajin.

Galbraith

  • He says Carl Craig’s last name is “Clay.” (Seriously, why can’t anyone get his name right? I know how he feels. –Jimmy)

He got through all his Toku Topic notes, which is good.

Next week is the second of the “Year of Gamera” double-header when poor Nate has to suffer through Gamera vs. Guiron (which has the best of the MST3K episodes). He’ll be joined by Luke Jaconetti of the Earth Destruction Directive podcast and Greg Meyer, who formerly hosted the Out of the Speedforce podcast. After that Nate’s series of mini-sodes on Toho classics comes to an end with another of my favorite Toho films, Sayonara Jupiter. We’re still working out issues with guests, but it looks like to be a solo episode.
