Episode 80: The Asylum’s “Monster Island” (Ft. Raymund Martin)

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In the (overdue) season 3 finale, Nate is forced to deal with Cameron Winter’s “Christmas gift”: the Asylum’s infamous Monster Island. It’s supposedly a “mockbuster” of 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but even by the Asylum’s standards, that’s a stretch. To unravel the legal loopholes and shenanigans that went into making this…movie, Nate brings on the Island’s star lawyer, Raymund Martin, and the man’s paralegal, Gary Steward. Not only do they riff this half-competent (and therefore, boring) “kaiyu” flick into the ground, they give you a crash course in the history of the Asylum and mockbusters. Nate’s contractual obligations are now complete!

Beforehand, Nate delivers his final report as the nonexistent “media master” to Mr. Gold, who reveals a few tantalizing details about what’s been happening on the Island lately.

Guest Cast

  • Michael Hamilton as Mr. Gold
  • Damon Noyes as Raymund Martin and Gary Steward

This episode’s prologue, “Heart of Gold,” was written by Michael Hamilton and Nathan Marchand.

Additional music:

  • “This Cowboy’s Hat” (instrumental) by Chris LeDoux
  • “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson
  • “Circus Music” (public domain)
  • “Kaiju Rap” by Jonah Ray

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 66: Damon Noyes vs. ‘The Giant Claw’

I wasn’t sure, given how Nate barely survived “The Year of Gamera,” if he could handle The Giant Claw for episode 66. But he insisted that its infamy and not its quality necessitated we cover it. Besides, Damon jumped at the chance to discuss it. “Crazy Bernice,” as we call this kaiju, is known for her strange behavior, as you heard when Nate and Damon commentated on H.E.A.T. narrowly escaping the Beta Site with the creature chasing them down. Good thing Zilla Junior is a loyal son…guard dog…. Anyway, here are my follow-up thoughts (finally) on that episode.

  • I double checked. Dirty Harry said, “Go ahead. Make my day,” in 1983’s Sudden Impact.
  • Actually, Nate, it’s not Mitch Marrow. The actor’s name is Jeff Morrow, and he played Mitch MacAfee. I know, your alliteration-loving brain conflated the two. This is why you keep me around.
  • Really, Damon? You’d die defending Reptilicus? Speaking as someone who has died once and seen that movie…there are worse causes for which to give one’s life.
  • “Protoplastic”? You meant, “Promoplasmic”!
  • It’s a book, not a movie, Damon. (Now if I could only remember what he was talking about…).
  • Giant Claws in space? Let me tell you, they’re far more terrifying in their natural environment. Well, in the antimatter galaxy, anyway. You see, a few years ago, I stumbled upon a wormhole between Jupiter and Saturn. It led to the antimatter galaxy. Like the proverbial curious cat, I flew my ship into the wormhole and barely survived my exit into that dangerous part of space because, as you know, I’m made of regular matter, which doesn’t mix well with antimatter. As my ship’s instruments screamed at me, the giant maw of, well, a Giant Claw filled my windshield. I barely dodged its bite and escaped through the wormhole. This is why I don’t visit the Beta Site much.
  • I looked at a couple sources (Wikipedia and the Romanian Culture Institute) that both discussed the origin of the word/name Nemesis. It’s meaning as a term for an enemy is more a recent development. The Greek goddess did punish mortals for hubris (i.e. arrogance before the gods), but she was also seen as a dispenser of justice; a judge who maintained order in the universe. In other words, she has a dualistic nature. So, Damon was correct.
  • It’s a good thing I can math. It’s a requirement to work at NASA. That’s another reason Nate keeps me around. He can’t math his way out of a paper bag.
  • What? I like hot dogs! Antimatter hot dogs! They used to serve them at parties in NASA!

Finally, here’s the obscenely huge file with all of Nate’s notes on this movie. I still can’t believe they spent 2.5 hours discussing it. The antimatter segment was fantastic, though. But again, I’m a NASA guy.

All right, time to get tomorrow’s blog ready! I’m catching up, baby!

Episode 76: Alex McCumbers vs. ‘Rampage’ (2018)

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! Nate is joined by a fresh face on the show: gaming journalist and podcaster Alex McCumbers. It makes sense because today’s “Ameri-kaiju” film is Rampage (2018) starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, which is based on a classic arcade game. While the movie is “almost good,” as Alex puts it, it does embrace some of the wackiness of its origins with wisecracking “Agent Negan” and cartoonish villains. But it never quite replicates the campy yet dark tone of the source material (I mean, c’mon, the evil corporation in the game was called “Scumlabs”). There’s some brief talk about CRISPR, which Nate wished he’d researched as the Toku Topic, but he promised Alex it’d be on the history of kaiju video games.

Before today’s broadcast, Nate reports to Mister Gold, who tells him he is aware of Nate’s text messages with Jessica the day she freed the Ymir. Now Mister Gold says he’s not sure he can trust Nate. After that harrowing experience, Nate and his merry band of secret rebels go to the last place he ever wants to go to get info from the last person he ever wants to see: the pub Nessie’s Brasserie and its proprietor, William H. George III. It’s an all-out sass war as soon as they walk in.

Check out Alex’s website and podcast, Forever Classic Games (https://foreverclassicgames.com/).

The prologue and epilogue, “Getting the Messages,” was written by Michael Hamilton and Nathan Marchand.

Guest Cast

  • Michael Hamilton as Mr. Gold and William H. George III
  • Damon Noyes as Raymund Martin and Gary Steward
  • Sarah Marchand as Jessica Shaw
  • Daniel DiManna as N.I.G.E.L.
  • Introducing Olivia Reed as Bonnie Lass

Additional music:

  • “Evil Rising” by David Fesliyan
  • “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson
  • “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo
  • “The Campbells Are Comin’” by Nesrality
  • “Bonnie Dundee” by Nesrality
  • “Bonnie Mary Hay” by Newrality
  • “Oh, Charlie Is My Darling” by Nesrality
  • “Scots Wha Ha’e wi’ Wallace Bled” by Nesrality

Jimmy’s Notes on Episode 62: Eric Anderson vs. ‘The Blob’ (1958)

Here we go! Time to share my notes on one of the most Americana monster movies ever made: The Blob (1958). Something I forgot to mention during the episode 62 broadcast was that I’ve been a huge fan of Steve McQueen since I was a kid. Him and James Dean and, of course, Nick Adams (my “spirit animal”). Those should come as no surprise to anyone. Hell, I once took a martial arts lesson as a youth in the 1970s from Mr. McQueen, who was trained by Bruce Lee. So, you could say I vicariously learned from the best.

Anyway, let’s get into my notes:

  • “Kaiju doo-doo”? Let’s not insult the Blob like that! Besides, I’ve talked with Ricky the kaiju zookeeper, and he says kaiju crap is different from monster to monster.
  • I let Nate have it every day. It’s part of my job description as his “intrepid producer” and his friend.
  • I checked the filming locations for the film, which, according to Wikipedia, were “around Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, principal photography took place at Valley Forge Studios. Several scenes were filmed in the towns of Chester Springs, Downingtown, Phoenixville, and Royersford, including the basement of a local restaurant which is today named Downingtown Diner.”
  • I hereby challenge Nate to Unmatched! Now I just need to decide who is my main….
  • Blobfest was held this year.
  • The game you were thinking of, Nate, was De Blob.
  • It’s “One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater,” Eric. You got the order wrong.
  • I taught Eric everything he knows about fact-checking radio hosts. He’s a good padawan.
  • My ego has recovered from the fact-checking. My storied life has made me resilient in mind and body.
  • The timeline for the sequels and remakes is 1972 and 1988.
  • I found Blobermouth on YouTube. We should have Eric on for a follow-up.
  • Whatever, Blobermouth (aka Nate—if that is your real name! Are you an alien? That’d explain some things).
  • The Blob will scare the hell out of you—at least according to the church-folk who made it. I confirmed this with Rev. Mifune.
  • “Frog and Toad” thing, huh? Haha!
  • SpaceGodzilla scat? That’s a theory, all right. I doubt there are any scientists who would agree with it…except maybe Dr. Dourif.
  • If I was Cobra Commander, I’d be ruling the world by now. I’ve read the “Evil Overlord List.” Be glad I have refrained from universal conquest.
  • “Presetellar,” Nate? You meant, “prestellar.” As in, “before stars.” This NASA man knows this! Typos are your kryptonite, it seems, writer-boy. 😛

Here are Nate’s uncut notes:

Hot diggity-dog! Two in one day! If working in the space industry has taught me anything, it’s to coast on your zero-G momentum. Onward!

Episode 68: Nick Hayden vs. ‘Cloverfield’

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! “Ameri-kaiju” jumps ahead 50 years, but as you’ll hear, the (in)famous Cloverfield has a lot in common with the classic 1950s films we’ve been covering. Nate’s longtime friend Nick Hayden drops by to discuss this movie because he’s loved it ever since he first experienced it in a theater—and it is an experience. Too much of one for some people, in fact! While it’s popular to hate on Cloverfield in the kaiju fandom, it popularized the “found footage” genre and launched J.J. Abrams’ studio, Bad Robot Productions. To the shock of some of Nate’s friends, he says this is the closest the United States has come to producing a Godzilla (1954). How and why? The Toku Topic helps explain that: the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Before this, Nate meets with Dr. Nick Tatopoulos on the Heat Seeker to discuss recent events. Nate learns Cameron Winter is covering his tracks, so Nate tells Nick he’s thinking of taking Mr. Gold’s promotion so he can spy on Winter. Afterward, Nate goes to Mr. Gold’s office to discuss the offer—only to be interrogated about Jessica’s shenanigans with the Ymir’s escape on Harryhausen’s birthday.

Check out Nick’s website (http://worksofnick.com/) and his podcast, Derailed Trains of Thought (http://derailedtrainsofthought.com/).

The prologue and epilogue, “Claws and Cash,” was written by Nathan Marchand.

Bonus Episode 12: ‘Beware! The Blob’ | Ft. Travis Alexander

Hello, kaiju lovers! In this bonus “Ameri-kaiju” episode, Travis Alexander of Kaiju Weekly and Henshin Men finally gets to see the goo—and he’s not happy! That’s mostly because he’s an animal lover and the Blob eats a kitten in the almost-forgotten and incredibly weird 1972 sequel, Beware! The Blob (aka Son of Blob). It’s the most bipolar movie Nate has ever seen for the show, and Travis, a lover of movies both weird and bad, found it borderline incomprehensible. Half of it is disjointed improvisational comedy, and the other half is a scary but inferior rehashing of the original 1958 classic. Strap for a discussion of more 30-year-old “teens,” a “hair sculptor,” and a Naked Turk!

Additional music:

  • “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson
  • Beware! The Blob Theme” by Mort Garson
  • “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo

Episode 66: Damon Noyes vs. ‘The Giant Claw’

Hello, kaiju lovers! Today’s episode is AS BIG AS A BATTLESHIP! Damon Noyes visits the Island (after yet another harrowing experience) for “Ameri-kaiju” to discuss 1957’s The Giant Claw. This infamous movie stars the ugliest antimatter-powered space bird you’ve ever seen! “Crazy Bernice,” as she’s known on the Island, looks more like Beaky Buzzard than Rodan, despite her movie being similar to the latter’s. Nate and Damon spend a surprising amount of time on this wacky movie, poking fun at the Claw marionette, theorizing over the bird’s origins, discussing borderline creepy 1950s flirting, andthe movie’s unofficial sequel novels! You might be wondering, “What could Marchand possibly research as a Toku Topic for The Giant Claw?” Antimatter. What else?

After the broadcast, Nate and Damon break in to commentate on Crazy Bernice escaping from the Beta Site and attacking H.E.A.T.—but thankfully, Zilla is around!

Check out the movies Damon was in! Maxie, directed by Jarrett Bryant, is on the streaming site Vimeo. One can get $1.00 off the price by using the code: LaneCounty. “Off the Road,” a 13-minute short from Hewlett Artistry, can be viewed on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/ZdJHBY2a4fg.

The “La Carcagne Promo” was written by Damon Noyes. The epilogue, “Crazy Bernice,” was written by Nathan Marchand.

Episode 64: Kaiju Weekly vs. ‘20 Million Miles to Earth’

Hello, kaiju lovers! MIFV’s season three theme, Ameri-kaiju, wouldn’t be complete without some Ray Harryhausen, so Nate invited both of his “co-hosts in kamen” (ba-dum-tsh!) to discuss 20 Million Miles to Earth. (Yes, Jimmy reminds Nate that he got his chronology wrong, because this film was released in 1957 and The Blob was 1958. Oops!). Harryhausen super-fans Travis Alexander and Michael Hamilton, co-hosts of the Kaiju Weekly podcast, join Nate in a chat that veers perilously close to derailing at multiple points. Jet lag will do that to you, especially when flying to the Island in the Rad Bug. Regardless, 20 Million Miles was Harryhausen’s first truly iconic film, paving the way for his fantasy epics that followed. The intrepid Jimmy From NASA keeps trying to tell his story about seeing a herd of Ymir on their native Venus, but nobody cares. The Toku Topic is the Soviet side of the Space Race since this film begins with a rocket ship crash and was released several months before the launch of Sputnik I. Be prepared for many (bad) Russian accents!

To compete with this broadcast, Cameron Winter did a livestream where he sent one of his Cyber-Flies to track down the Ymir so he could be put on display for the film’s anniversary and Harryhausen’s birthday in June. Winter rambles about seemingly random things while doing so.

Episode 62: Eric Anderson vs. ‘The Blob’ (1958)

Hello, kaiju lovers! Our season three theme, Ameri-kaiju, “creeps and leaps and slides and glides” along when MIFV MAX member Eric Anderson joins Nate to discuss 1958’s The Blob. This was Steve McQueen’s debut as a 30-year-old teenager dating the future TV wife of Andy Griffith. This classic of 1950s sci-fi cinema was an independent film produced by a studio known for making religious and educational films, which makes it doubly appropriate that the founder of Nerd Chapel (who’s also a substitute teacher) is on today’s episode. Being an influential indie film is also probably why, believe it or not. it’s in the Criterion Collection. The Toku Topic is a phenomenon related to the true story that inspired this kooky film: star jelly.

The “See the Goo” promo was written by The Monster Island Board of Directors. The epilogue, “Ozaki’s Message,” was written by Nathan Marchand.

Additional music:

  • “The Blob” by The Five Blobs
  • “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson
  • “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo
  • “Numbness & Knives” by HoboKa

Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org, including those by InspectorJ.
